Make time to explore the surrounding area, it's the beginning of New England and beautiful. Get off the tourist trail. In New London, the Arbetorium at Connecticut College is a great respite of natural beauty. Stroll Stonington and see old sea captain's houses now set amongst antique shops and some great restaurants - Neils on the main street and South One closer to the highway. Get on a backroad in Ledyard or North Stonington. You'll travel country roads lined with stone fences. The Taj Mahal of Ledyard is Foxwoods - the casino run by the Pequot Indians. Even if you don't gamble, you'll love the grounds, restaurants, theatres and shops. Finally Groton is the east coast U.S. Naval Submarine base. Tour the Nautilus (free) 1-800-343-0079.
Where to stay? Randalls Ordinary is a fine B&B 860-599-4540. Otherwise, one of the many motels. I would shy away from Mystic Seaport - too commercial for a relaxing stay. Clarion Inn in Groton, not fancy, but there's a nice indoor pool and the attached restaurant, G. Willikers, is outstanding for very reasonably priced food. Did you know MYSTIC PIZZA was filmed at the restaurant of the same name in the village of Mystic?
Email me if you have questions. My knowledge has been amassed by many visits to the area. My son is a submariner anchored in Groton.
