B&B in Portland
 

We are taking a road trip to Maine in May 2007..... Any suggestions on a B&B for 4 people on the water?

Maine's a really big place. More specifics would yield better results from 'us locals'.

Jeez, sorry Anonymous. Didn't read the title, just the post. bblount, there are no B&B's on the water in Portland. Portland is not a B&B kinda place. There are a few but they're not near the waterfront area. You may find something on one of the Casco Bay islands if that interests you. Try Peaks or Chebeague.

OK, what about a nice hotel near the water? Isn't Portland close to the water?

Portland is a city with a working harbor. If you want to stay IN Portand, waterfront is probably not a good option.

I assume you will be making other stops on your trip-those might be better for waterfront lodging. Let us know what other stps you are planning, and we'll try to help!

The Old Port has a couple of high end places to stay - Portland Harbor Hotel, The Armory and the Hilton Garden Inn. The Old Port would be the place to stay if you're looking for walking distances to shopping and great restaurants/bars. If you want to be on the beach, check out The Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth.

Thanks for the info........... To tell you the truth, all I want to do is go to Maine and eat Lobster...... I lived in Michigan for the better part of my life, and now I live in San Antonio, so the lobster choices have never been an option. So, now that we are taking a trip to Maine, I just want to eat great Lobster at cheap prices......... Will that work for me in Portland? Any suggestions on where to eat lobster?

Best place to eat lobster in May in the Portland area is The Lobster Shack in Cape Elizabeth. Amazing setting, but basic, no frills place. You can't beat the view, though!
As a previous poster said, there aren't many B&B's in Portland, but do check out The Pomegranate Inn. It's wonderful, although not on the water.
Lastly, be aware that it can be COLD in Maine in May - the leaves aren't even fully on the trees until the end of the month!

J's Oyster Bar is on the waterfront and a great, no frills for sure, place to get lobster. Probably the best price in the area.

I'd suggest driving North of Portland.

First stop - Harraseeket Lunch and Lobster in South Freeport. They have indoor dining and picnic tables outside overlooking the bay. Yum. then you can explore the shops in Freeport if you're shoppers.

For B&B's on the coast - go further North to Boothbay Harbor or Camden.
Lord Camden Inn is nice or Castleview by the Sea. If you make it as far as Bar Harbor, the Bar Harbor Inn is nice but pricey.

bblount - I stayed at a B&B in Maine - called The Inn at Park Spring, but it wasn't near the water. It was a decent walk to the port. We did see lots of upscale hotels near the water though and if I were to go again, I'd stay closer to the water. My husband and I were there in early May 2006 and we didn't think it was cold, but we're from South Dakota and used to the cold. We only had 1 1/2 days of rain and the rest of the time it was very nice -- mid 60s. The only problem we ran into with eating lots of lobster was that none of the lobster shacks were open that early in the season. :( But we had plenty of lobster in the restaurants - which was more expensive.
