Thanks for sharing that one, Neil. That is truly a classic that provided many needed Friday laughs!

Questionmotives, that's the one I was going to mention! That guy with the idea of someone "renting" his driving services and RV was pretty freaky.

FainaAgain Nov 21st, 2003 11:32 AM

Neal, thank you for posting that URL for Clara & Herb, I missed that one. Oh, the happy times before the registration...

Joan, I agree with you, Darvy is the strangest poster.

There was another hilarious post, I'm surprised nobody mentioned "how do you adress a nun", but it was on European board.

Happy Friday Folks!

What's interesting is that the editors of Fodors deleted my response to this post. I had responded that my favorite post of all time was the Monkey Thread. I then, without any ill will, said that the editors of Fodors must not have a sense of humor since they deleted that entire thread.
Gee, I guess they really can't take a joke.
Gee, I guess I won't be buying anymore Fodors travel books.

beachbum, Scarlett, Al, Faina, and others, to me the Herb and Clara thread ranks as one of the best on-line, free-form collaborations I have ever seen in any medium. It reminded me of a "mystery" that came out a few years ago called "Naked Came the Manatee" in which a dozen well-know South Florida authors took turns writing chapters of a book that got funnier as it got more preposterous. As to the Fodors thread, I still have no idea of who the perps were ("Nigel" offers up some suspicions toward the end).

Such a thread could only have existed where people could post anonymously -- and assume one another's identity freely (I believe there must have been four or five "Claras", and "Herb" had more conflicting voices that most novels).

The downside was that, at the same time this hilarious thread was unspooling, the rest of the site was being regularly sabotaged by bored junior high school students who offered neither wit nor intelligence; only meanness.

In a perfect world, the Fodors editors would cleave a sub-site where such foolishness could once again reign.

So many mahalos Neil for sending me excerpts from my long lost cousins transcripts of oh so very boring travel. For years they have gone on and on, just like their bastard Simba, that little sht. They are too tiresome to contemplate as I consider my next trip to Maui....Four Seasons, too snobby? Kea Lani, too funky? Grand Wailiea===too many add ons$$$ Ritz tooo toooo????? I just don't know what to do. Damn I hope there are no brat kids wherever I choose. They are so tiresome, and this is a Really Really Really Special trip for me and my "DH". Please, how to keep the knatss away! BZZZ

Marilyn Nov 21st, 2003 01:39 PM

Does anyone have the Monkey Thread saved? I missed it completely.

I have Tipping the Pilot and I Was Drunk the Day My Mom Got Out of Prison saved to word and will email either to anyone who wants them.

gyppielou Nov 21st, 2003 01:54 PM

Please just top them if you can!!! Thanks! Gyppielou

Marilyn Nov 21st, 2003 02:15 PM

Unfortunately, I saved these 2 posts before I knew about the address system. However, here is a link from someone else:
How Much Should I Tip the Pilot?

Can't find an address for the other one :-(

sundowner Nov 21st, 2003 03:06 PM

What about the duct tape thread - that was hilarious.

FainaAgain Nov 21st, 2003 03:19 PM

Thank you Marilyn!

Oh, yeah, the duct tape thread... this was another great one! Anybody has a copy?

GoTravel Nov 21st, 2003 05:40 PM

Faina, I topped the duct tape thread. It is under "We're Back!".

Anyone have the monkey thread handy?

Jacko Nov 21st, 2003 05:59 PM

You have to remember Danny has a strange thing about monkey posts. Any mention of a monkey or kielbasa and Danny deletes it. Hmmm...

GoTravel Nov 21st, 2003 06:13 PM

Does anyone remember the bride from Canada that had the 'Sandals ruined my perfect wedding/honeymoon' thread? There was an entire site devoted to her wedding story from how she met her man on the internet to the honeymoon.

They met on some site like BeanieBabyCollectors.com or other sillyness.

questionmotives Nov 24th, 2003 02:47 PM

Hey, I forgot all about KIELBASA until someone mentioned it here, LOL! Simple posts, often just a well placed word or divided syllables, but it always made me laugh.

(....kiel....ba....sa.......)

mauimarti Nov 24th, 2003 03:24 PM

I loved the song thread...everyone wrote their favorite lyrics to songs related to travel.

cigalechanta Nov 24th, 2003 03:31 PM

OMG, I didn't know Danny hated Monkeys. I started the monkey one on the Euro forum, when I posted tying to bring my monkey into the gambling casinos. "Heeza"was his name and we had fun. I now have a porcupine!
Happy Thanksgiving all!

karens Nov 24th, 2003 05:56 PM

I haven't been here that long, but I've searched around a lot. I thought the Top 10 Best White trash destinations was hysterical. And it made me question how much we've evolved as a species when the thread referred to the website www.mulletsgalore.com. Check it out - go to the picture archives and check out mulleted matrimony. Yikes! Now we're big 76ers fans, but I would really draw the line at wearing their logo on my wedding gown! And keep scrolling through to the end - did any of you have anything similar at your weddings?!

FainaAgain Nov 25th, 2003 11:14 AM

GoTravel, thank you! Ahhh, the memories of happy times :)

Tess_Durberville Nov 25th, 2003 02:09 PM

On the Europe board, there were several classics. Unfortunately one of my favorites the 'haggis in a tube' thread doesn't appear to still exist.

wow Nov 25th, 2003 03:52 PM

I love remembering, & being reminded of, all these hilarious posts where, at some point, each seemed to take on a life of its own! A recent post over @ "Other Topics" is funny, weird, scary(??) and definitely worth a look! Header: "Does anybody else travel with your own bed sheets??"...or, something like that. So...Fodors when are you going to do a compilation of "Award Winning Posts"???
