Autum in California

Where is the best place to see Autum foliage in California during the last week of September/first week of October?

About 2000 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

Well, the problem is that California forests are pine and redwood, which are evergreen--no fall foilage! So any deciduous trees will be planted, and they don't turn all at once. Certain areas are pretty that time of year, though. I'd go to Apple Hill in the Gold Country--it's when everything is hopping there, with lots of crafts and food booths, and places serving apple everything, everywhere.

We have some trees that change color in Northern CA, but nothing like New England. The above suggestion for the Gold Country is a very good one.

Kim, The north Gold Country has always been highlighted in various travel mags as kind of a "New England of the West".

You may wish to fly into Sacramento and head up Hwy 50 to Placerville and go north on Hwy 49 and go up all the way thru Coloma, Auburn, Grass Valley, Nevada City, Downieville, Sierra City and then south down Hwy 89 towards Truckee, Tahoe, Reno and I-80. You can then go down I-80 to Sacto.

I think AAA has published some articles on it from time to time. Some interesting side trips also and some quaint B&Bs in Grass Valley/Nev City.

You may wish to fly into Reno and reverse the route. You may also save some $$$ as sometimes it's cheaper to fly out/into Reno vs Sac..Just don't throw it down an stingy airport slot!

Also consider flying into Oakland instead of SFO. Often cheaper flights available to there and less chance of fog delays. If you want a wonderful unique B&B search for the website of the Flume's End B&B in Nevada City--it's a real winner in a beautiful location. Sadly, I don't think any of our trees change color until closer to November at least here in the Bay area. Maybe up near Mt. Shasta?

Kam....I forgot. We went from Redding to Eureka for T'giving on Hwy 299 and caught the tail end of the turning and remarked how nice it must have looked at it's height.
Regarding turning later, I recall it may have something to do w/ the amount of rain we got in the spring???

A little bit of a logistical prob. to get up there for somebody coming from out of state.

The Auburn to Truckee drive via 49/89 usually does it for us.

Thank you all for answering. Bob, good catch on my spelling.

Ron, I don't expect California foliage to be any where near the White Mountain in NH. We stayed at the Mount Washington hotel during October 5 years ago. That entire area was just spectacular! But since we live in southern CA, we just wanted to do a short Fall getaway. We are planning on going to Yosemite during the first week of October this year. I read somewhere that there are some colors up there during Fall.

Kal and Kam, thank you for your suggestions. We love the Gold Country. I have never been there during Fall. The Spring time there is very beautiful with plenty of wild flowers, Daffodil Hills, especially. We will have to visit during Fall one of these years.

Kim,
I live in Nevda City so of course highly recommend this area as the place to visit. As for color, usually the end of October or early to mid November is the most colorful, depending on weather. As someone else said, we do not have native trees that turn very good colors. Most of our color trees have been planted which means the best ones are in the towns. Many of the newer trees being planted are the ones that turn color and are beginning to big enough for a show. Some years Nevada City and Grass Valley are very spectacular with people coming from far away to Oh and Ah and take pictures. The many evergreens make a perfect contrast to the colored trees. Some of these are over 100 years old and very special. Hope you are lucky and hit the colors at just the right time. The farther north and the nigher elevations of course turn soonest.

I seem to remember being told that trees will color depending on the elevation and the number of hours of daylight and intensity of the daylight during the fall.(not the temperature of the days!) That's all I know--it seems to vary from year to year and nobody seems to have a pat answer.
