Authentic Puerto Rican and Dominican Food Restaurants in NYC....
Where I am from, I have a good selection of el salvadorean, nicaraguan, mexican food restaurants.....
But I would love to try food in NYC that I just can't get here....namely, Puerto Rican, Dominican, Haitian, and probably some more than I can't remember to name right now....
Anyone (especially NYC natives) have good recommendations on traditional food restaurants in NYC that focus on food from the cultures and countries listed above?
If I left anyone out, or didn't differentiate, I do apologize.
Also, price is an option, and I don't mind hole in the wall type places as long as the food is good, and there are no bugs (sorry to be so blunt, but some restaurants where I am from have critter issues).
thanks everybody!

El Malecon at 4141 Broadway (in Washingon Hts) is a Domincan joint with the best rotisserie chicken ever. It's not fancy, but the food is all good and it's inexpensive. When I lived there in 2001, $6 would buy an entire chicken and a huge container of rice and beans.

You don;t have to go that far. Cafe con Leche on Amsterdam near 95th st has dominican food. I adore the chicken with garlic and lime and the plantain selection.
Also a very casuale, inexpensive neighborhood place.

One Dominican restaurant I thought had great food(specialty:mofongo) and reasonable prices is El Rey De Monfongo between 182 & 183 Streets on St. Nicholas Ave., New York City they are open 24 hours hours, nice decor, and live (no dancing) music after 10:00 pm.

I think you'd do better on chowhound for this kind of info, both restaurants and shops. Here's one link to get you into their site

For Puerto Rican food, I'd steer you to Old San Juan, on 9th Avenue in Hell's Kitchen (between 51st and 52nd Streets, I think). There are also very good places uptown, though. A churrasco (hangar steak) with chimmichurri is a typical Puerto Rican dish and is served with rice and beans. Mofongo (mashed plantains that are mixed with meat or seafood) is another typical Puerto Rican dish that I like. Lechon (roasted pork with lots of garlic, marinated in sour orange) can also be quite good if you get it fresh.
