Austin trip
 

Thinking of going to Austin for a "girls weekend." We are all in our upper 20s/lower-30s and want to be close to 6th Street.

Where is the closest place to stay so we can walk to 6th Street -- looking at Omni or Crowne Plaza.

Also, interested in going to Lake Travis for a day. Does anyone recommend any boat tours, etc. Would like to keep price somewhat down (don't want to do big private charter). There will be 8 to 10 of us.

The Driskill is beautiful but probably a little pricey. It's right at the corner of 6th and Brazos. The Hilton is another good choice. You will have a blast in Austin. The Omni is very close to 6th Street also. I think the Crowne Plaza is right next to I-35 so I'd choose one of the others.

Just did something close to what you're doing--a bachelor party with 11 guys in Austin. We stayed at the Stephen F. Austin and loved it. A short walk to 6th Street, great bar in the hotel, and really nice rooms.

We didn't do the boat tour but I called around for a charter and it was surprisingly reasonable so don't rule that out. The charter company I spoke with let you bring your coolers or could set up a bar.

Hi Canto. The Radisson has a good location right on the shores of Town Lake. It's on 1st and Congress Streets, just a few short blocks of walking to 6th.

Just as an FYI: The University of Texas has its commencement exercises the weekend of May 21st, so that might not be a good time to come, as far as getting a reservation. There are also a number of other colleges in the area that will most likely take some of the rooms as well on other dates.

There is an ExtendedStay on 6th street to the west side of Congress...that is, if you're looking to save money (and spend it on fun :-) ) The good thing is that it puts you within walking distance of both 6th street (ugh..) and the Warehouse District (much better).

If money isn't an issue, then the Intercontinental is a good option.

Friends stayed at the Hilton Convention Center and found it to be a very very short cab ride for them (off 2nd/3rd?) But east of congress is quite close to some homeless gathering areas/dark alleys...I'd stick with cabs.
