I'm passing along your City Theater Company experience to a dear friend who is one of the founders and owners of this venue. What fun to find it here on Fodors!

Glad you've enjoyed Austin again, come back soon!

Iregeo, great choices, I'm impressed. Gary Clark Jr. gets rave reviews and I think he was in a movie... Let us know when you plan another trip. Perhaps some of us could meet.

kkura, I'm ashamed to say I haven't heard of some of the places you mentioned!

kkukura, glad you had a great time in Austin. Toy Joy is definitely one of my favorites. Just a little correction in case anyone else wants to research further, it's Pemberton castle. Here's the history of it:

Not sure if he still lives there, but it was owned by the film director, Robert Rodriguez.

Thanks AustinTraveler for the correction on the castle name and the information about its history. I teach so I always find time for the book store and the toy store when I am in Austin. As usual I have come home with things to use in my classroom!

Austin- I bought a Keep Austin Weird book years ago and a map which shows interesting places in Austin. I try to find a different place whenever we visit Austin.

Interesting trip report, kkukura.

Just looking at your list of experiences, it struck me that you could find every one of them in Dallas or Houston. And many more of them.

traveler_friend, that's just a really weird response on your behalf. kkukura LIVES in Houston so I'm sure she's aware of what to see and do there. She enjoys visiting Austin. Something wrong with that?

kkukura Sep 5th, 2010 05:02 PM

traveler_friend- I do live in Houston, but love to get away for short weekend trips. While here in Houston I check out many interesting places to go and see in this area too. I have my favorite things to do in the Houston area also! I like to explore new places and get to know them well. Austin is one of my favorite places to go to in TX. My son, though, tells me we go there so much it is like we live there too! It is a convenient city to travel to not far from Houston. Anyway, I am a teacher, and I always like to learn more!

She may in fact enjoy Austin, but obviously not for the reasons listed, because the list consists of things that are present in Houston as well as Austin. You don't have to go to Austin to find them.

That information is something I wanted to make clear to casual readers of this forum.

Iregeo, I don't know how I missed this report until today. I'm so glad you enjoyed Austin. Swisshiker and I often meet at the Clay Pit for lunch, it's a major fave of mine and I'm glad you liked it too. I'm sorry the bats weren't flying that night, who knew they would all go into labor at once. LOL!! I also enjoy the ice cream juggling at Amy's, that's what makes it so much fun to go there instead of Baskin Robbins. :-D

I hope we will have a GTG next time you are in town.

traveler_friend-
I was just writing up a trip report of what we did in Austin because this was an Austin thread. I do like to go to Toy Joy and Book People when in Austin and make a point of doing so most times I am in Austin. They are unique shops that I find interesting. I also like to do history walks in the downtown area so I can learn more about TX history. Please don't take offense to either Dallas or Houston. I live in Houston and I am constantly doing things here (and will be willing to share ideas with interested people). Although I don't get to Dallas as much as previously, I will be stopping through there on the way back from OK in October and hope to go to the Nasher Schulpture Exhibit. While each town has similarities, I still like to "get away" for weekend breaks from my daily routine and I often choose the Hill Country to go to. It is a close distance to Houston and there is much to do. I also like the hills there!

Kkukura,

I'm sure you find many unique and interestin things in Austin. Much encouragement to tell us about them.

Iregeo Sep 11th, 2010 03:28 PM

Thanks, P_M! I would LOVE to do an Austin GTG next time!

Will be eager to go over the other meetings you had planned. Austin is a cool place to be in and good to hear that you enjoyed your trip a lot.
