Austin Texas- really great to visit?
I've heard that Austin is a great city. Why? Would it be a good place to see for a 3 day holiday out of Los Angeles? Would another city in Texas be more fun for two 30ish adults, no kids?

Thanks.

Having lived in Austin for nine years, I wouldn't leave L.A. for three days just to go to it alone. However, if you were in the Texas area anyway, Austin would be the best place for two adults looking for a great place to party and sightsee for three days.

San Antonio would be more justified for a first stop to Texas; it's got more history and just as nice a nightlife.

As another Austinite, I would have to agree with Paul. Austin is worthy a visit someday (perhaps as part of a trip to San Antonio and driving through the Texas Hill Country). It is maybe a little too close to LA in character to make it unique enough as a destination from So Cal. What can you say about a city who's biggest attractions are flying rodents, a museum dedicated to a Democrat, blooming weeds, and a street lined with bars (just kidding Austin Chamber of Commerce). San Antonio has more history and more to do as a tourist. Fort Worth also has more to see and do, so I would choose either of the two cities first. If you do come to Texas, shoot for early April when the drive alone is worth it along the Tx highways. Do not come after June or before October unless you really enjoy hot weather.

Here's a recent article in the NYTimes about Austin. Seems like the time to be there might be early March for South by Southwest.

http://www.nytimes.com/2002/02/17/tr...epageinsidebox

Thanks for the replies! I'm always looking for a good short holiday _ I will save Austin for a longer combined trip.
