Austin in January: Where to Stay, What to Do

My son wants to see UT. What's to see and do in Austin in January. Where to stay? Where to go after...

When will you be there? What is your son interested in? You can check out what is going on in Austin here: http://www.austin360.com/ Also, the UT website, www.utexas.edu has calendars of everything that is happening on campus.

The following link will provide a lot of information for visiting the UT campus as a prospective student, including a list of hotels near the University: http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/meetus/visit/
Give us more info on what you and your son are interested in seeing and how much time you have for this trip and we can give you plenty of ideas of what to see and do in and around Austin.

We have been to Austin in January and enjoyed it very much.

What to do:

Of course, city sightseeing, e.g. the Capitol, the Austin Museum of Art, the Town Lake (which is nice on a sunny day).

And at night: The music clubs on 6th Street plus Antone's and the Continental Club.

Buying records, e.g. at Waterloo Record Store.

And after Austin:

What about Texas Hill Country? Luckenbach and Gruene are especially atmospheric.

I'm not a big fan of the Hill Country in the winter, everything's so brown and ugly that time of year even if the weather is nice (which you have no guarantees of). I'd stick to Austin and maybe hit San Antonio if you have time.
