Austin Advice - Live Music

I'll be in Austin mid-March and am looking for live music ideas. I had no idea that the SXSW conference was going on, but I won't even try for tickets there.

Looking for alt-country, jazz, crossover, or classical.

I'm not a big fan of country, but do like Lyle Lovett, Emmylou Harris and general fingerpicking musical wizardry.

Thanks.

Check out who's playing at Gruene Hall - well worth the trip.

Check out www.austin360.com They have all the listings. Just plug in your dates and you'll get the list.

You don't need to buy a wristband (ticket) to SXSW unless there's someone you really want to see. There will be TONS of free shows. Many clubs, along Sixth Street, and elsewhere around town, will have free shows. There will be three nights of free music also at Auditorium Shores starting March 13. Not sure if you'll be here for the music part of the festival or the film part, but you won't have trouble finding music. Most of the country music here is actually Americana, not typical country so I'm sure you'll like it.

Read the Chronicle to find out who will be where on the dates you're in town.

Thanks for the suggestions. Gruene is on the way from SA to Austin, so I'll stop by.

I'm staying at Lakeway, west of Austin - any interesting quaint towns nearby? Looks like a high end resorty area to me.

Thanks.
