How about flying into Portland and out of Seattle? There's plenty to see in both states. I'm not sure of your interests or budget, but the drive from Portland to Seattle is about 3-4 hours with plenty of great stops along the way, including Mount St. Helens and the 6 mile loop trail (http://www.stateparks.com/nisqually.html) near Olympia, which is a big hit for birders.

What sort of activities suit you and your family on a vacation?

We like all sorts of things.... hiking, national parks, scenic beauty, shopping (two teenage girls) wonderful restaurants and interesting, out of the ordinary lodging in scenic spots! Tall order, huh? Thanks for your resposne. We have friends that were there recently and said it was beautiful - know anything about the San Juan Islands? Thanks again

Seattle would be a great cooler destination. Portland is delightful and you could hike along the Columbia River Gorge. There's a great place called Voodoo donuts that kids adore, lots of other fun stops in Portland.

Seattle has tons to do, and you could take ferries to islands in the Puget Sound if you want some outdoor activities. It's a gorgeous city that is perfect for families. If you felt like it, you could take a ferry all the way to Victoria BC. Check out familytravelforum.com for more specifics on what to do in those areas.

My mom visits every year from St. Louis in August and has a tremendous time.
A few unique excursions in no particular order:
1) Stay at Rosario in the San Juans
2) Kayak in Friday Harbor
3) Rent canoes/kayaks at Aqua Verde in Seattle
4) Experience Tillicum Village
5) Splurge at Teatro Zinzani
6) Visit Salish Lodge/Snoqualmie Falls and stop at Boehms Chocolates and Hedges Winery along the way
7) Take a ferry to Bainbridge Island and stroll around town
8) Take the Underground Seattle Tour
9) Watch the Mariners at Safeco to give you a reality check on what other cities endure without Cardinals fever.

Just some summery thoughts on a dreary Feb day here.
