As a former Southern Cal resident I can tell you that the temperatures there are still very nice during the summer. The places mentioned in northern cal's central coast are also very nice and cooler still than Southern California. Though Yosemite should be tolerable, central Cal which is where i live now is extremely hot and triple digit temperatures are very common. I have actually come to appreciate and enjoy days in the 90's which was pretty much unherd of growing up in Los Angeles. I would certainly recommend Southern Cal for your teen.

So after discussing this with my son, husband (and family who live in LA) ----we have decided to fly into San Jose (tickets bought), and travel around San Fran, Yosemite, and Monterey/Big Sur. I think Lake Tahoe is out. Santa Cruz is a great idea. Biking and the boardwalk sound fun. I am thinking San jose 8/20, San Fran, then Yosemite until 28th. Then maybe Monterey/Santa Cruz. Need to figure this piece out. Heading back out of San Jose on 9/3. We will get together with family and friends in San Fran (suggested hotels with a car??) and Monterey/Santa Cruz/Big Sur (again suugested hotels or even campgrounds with cabins?
Thanks for all the great suggestions!
