snowrooster, the strange thing is the thread was not that controversial. But, apparantly it has been pulled.

The title was along the lines of Crazy Things Tourists do in your area.

GoT complained that a guy from Mass (I think) yelled at her for waiting outside a store for her husband in the No Parking - Fire Zone lane. I think her controversial statement was that she had raised enough money to buy several "radar things" and implied she had the right to wait there for her husband. Several posters thought donations to the fire department did not entitle one to park in a fire zone.

I shared that I was almost ticketed for doing the same and the police told me that waiting in the car in the driver's seat with the car running was considered "parking".

Then, there was a discussion of No Standing/ No Parking zones. Several others shared things that tourists did that drives one crazy.

Again, never saw anything controversial or mean. Patrick's post was the most animated "What is wrong with you people" - but that's Patrick being Patrick.

When GoTravel posted that she was signing out, I went back and reread the posts (including mine) several times.

As you know, snowrooster, I have gotten sarcastic and perhaps "mean" in the past, but fellow Fodorites, please tell me if you think anything I said - or anyone else - was mean. It was much later that I even put the Crazy Tourist thread with GoT signing off. I thought surely something else was going on in another thread or forum.

If one signs off every time someone disagrees with you on this board, the door would be slamming behind most of us and this forum would be as active as Frommer's.

And, yes, beach_dweller, GoT is training for the NY Marathon (on FFRR).

I'm sincere here. If anyone read or remembers anyone being out of line or controversial (including me) please share.

I know annesherrod doesn't want to hear any more about fire lanes, but I know for a fact (first hand experience) that the Fire Chief and Police Department in OWJ's new neck of the woods considers waiting in the Fire Zone for a person in the store a violation of the Fire Code.

Sequoia has already apologized for a "nasty" comment - along the lines of donations to the fire department doesn't entitle one to park in fire zones.

All of this hullabullo seems a bit strange to me.

I had a dream last night, that I was about to get extremely busy doing the 3day walk for Breast Cancer, so I wanted to let my friends in Fodorland know I was on hiatus. So I started a thread called Au Revoir.

"Au revoir my fellow fodorites! I'm going to take a break from this forum for a while!"

Well don't you know about a thousand people in my dream posted with all sorts of reasons why I was saying goodbye......I was really only busy with my life and doing the 3day walk...which isn't really until next week.

Next thing I know this woman that looks just like Glinda the Good Witch on Wizard of Oz comes floating in with a beautiful Prada backpack and handstiched mules from Milan....no not the jackass, the shoe......and tells me...

"Come back dear gyppie, there's no place like fodors, there's no place like fodors"........and then a flying monkey swooped down, stole my prada and the good witch ran off in the designer mules.....

I woke up asking for AuntieM in Kauai to please tell me how to get over island sickness........she told me "Well my dear Grasshopper, you must GoTravel!
THE END

starrsville Jul 5th, 2005 12:36 PM

I'll turn the Wicked soundtrack I've been playing non-stop back on. It goes perfectly with your dream!

dcespedes Jul 5th, 2005 12:57 PM

gyppielou, that is a hoot....a very thoughtful hoot! Thanks for the laugh :-D

gyppielou Jul 5th, 2005 01:31 PM

Well dontcha know it's the godshonest truth!!!!!! Geeessssshhhhh!!! The damn witch took off with the mules!!!!!!!

dcespedes Jul 5th, 2005 01:47 PM

:-D LOL! :-D

OneWanderingJew Jul 5th, 2005 01:47 PM

That was a classic! Thanks for putting a smile on my sweaty face!

And the dish ran away with the spoon. I didn't see anything really truly mean on that thread. Some of it a little snippy maybe but for heaven's sake, what would Foder's be without a bit of snipping? Dead as Frommer's is right. I try to avoid most of the major broo-ha-has that happend but I learned a long time ago, you have to be a tad thick skinned to stay on the web.

gyppielou Jul 5th, 2005 02:07 PM

there you go again, dontcha know that I'm walking the 3DayBreast Cancer Walk.....raised over $6000 to save the ta tas! GoTravel is out running a 10K right now.... so I have no idea what y'all are carryin on about.......dont know why I can't find those damn mules on this thread........

Patrick Jul 5th, 2005 02:08 PM

" Patrick's post was the most animated "What is wrong with you people" - but that's Patrick being Patrick."

And he does that so well, don't you think? LOL

Actually, my post came after I sought out that thread to see what this one was all about. It wasn't so much the repeated insults to GoTravel that got me, it was the repeated reference to her "parking" in the zone, when she had explained over and over she wasn't "parked" in it. I felt "what's wrong with you people" directed to those who couldn't seem to understand her car wasn't parked was a very logical response. Especially considering by that time it had upset GoTravel enough that she had posted this post to say she was leaving!

HyacinthBucket Jul 5th, 2005 03:03 PM

Good bye!

In message boards such as these, and just as in life, people come, people go, and people just leave for awhile. Life goes one. What boring lives do get all lathered up over someone who leaves? I would imagine that anyone who was upset and was leaving would simply go away. The originating poster is probably merely seeking attention, and has royally been provided same.

I would miss her contributions, although I am sure after time I would eventually forget her. Such is life, no?

snowrooster Jul 5th, 2005 03:10 PM

Ms Bucket - I suggest you recall your own advice and stick to talking travel. That is your soapbox, no?

HyacinthBucket Jul 5th, 2005 03:19 PM

Does the title not sound as if it might be travel? I wondered what destination it would be or if it could be a farewell to a holiday location being left behind to return to work. I was wrong in my assumptions.

snowrooster Jul 5th, 2005 03:27 PM

It just seems comically ironic that one of the resident complainers about non-travel related threads would choose to contribute to one. Perhaps they aren't so bad after all. I do have to agree that there is a certain drama involved in announcing ones exit, but we all have our quirks and that's what makes life interesting.

wanderluster Jul 6th, 2005 04:16 AM

Snowrooster, LOL, good one and right on -
And I agree there's definitely drama and attention involved in announcing ones exit.
And yes, we all have our quirks that makes life (and this forum)interesting.

Perhaps we will *see* GoT and her/his caustic wit again under another screen name.
Perhaps (s)he is already back.
Perhaps (s)he never left.

snowrooster Jul 6th, 2005 06:57 AM

Agreed, wanderluster. In fact, I would bet money that she had read every single response on this thread. :-)

MikeT Jul 6th, 2005 08:18 AM

And look at all the attention she has brought herself, with everyone running to her defense.

talk about your drama

ronkala Jul 6th, 2005 09:05 AM

Most firelanes have signs reading "No Parking or Standing" GT was clearly "standing" in the lane, a violation.

Greatsights Jul 6th, 2005 09:15 AM

You can be ticketed for sitting in a car with the engine running IN a fire lane. It's a fact in most any state of the union.

Let's let the story end and get back to TRAVEL.

otto Jul 6th, 2005 09:42 AM

good luck gotravel...enjoy the rest of the summer!

Orcas Jul 6th, 2005 10:05 AM

Greatsights, How do you know that? I checked in our state's driving manual after reading this discussion, and couldn't find this prohibition (Washington). I did find it in the Georgia manual when I read it, on- line. I'd guess that this varies from state to state.

ahhnold Jul 6th, 2005 10:40 AM

I'll miss ya GoT. Good to have you around. But I wouldn't let those who take this place a little to serious bother me. Remember, this should be relaxing.

here_today_gone2Maui Jul 6th, 2005 11:27 AM

It has always been my understanding that a red curb universally means "no parking, no stopping, no standing," whether posted or not. A yellow curb indicates a loading zone. And a "white zone," as anyone who has ever been to LAX can tell you, is "for the loading and unloading of passengers only."

seetheworld Jul 6th, 2005 11:32 AM

Except where I live, the yellow curb is the fire lane -- go figure.

MikeT Jul 6th, 2005 11:33 AM

Horse . . . dead . . . beaten . . .

joan Jul 6th, 2005 12:04 PM

You guys are WAAAYYY off base. GoT is not leaving because she's miffed. She's way too tough for that, as we've seen in the past. Remember, if she's told us once, she's told us a thousand times: "GoTravel knows ALL!" Not the type of poster to quit.

She's either bored or busy, or as Gyppie said - she's probably out running a marathon.

MikeT Jul 6th, 2005 12:26 PM

It has sure given her the attention she hoped to achieve.
