Attire for Carnegie Hall?
My husband and I will be attending a performance at Carnegie Hall on Sunday evening. It's a children's choir festival that our daughter is participating in. What is appropriate attire for this? Am I correct in thinking that since this isn't a symphony, etc., we can be a little less formal?
I am planning on wearing a black dress and pearls. Will my husband need a suit, or will dress trousers, a fine-gauge turtleneck, and leather jacket be adequate? We will be carrying on luggage for this short trip and are trying to minimize our packing. Thanks for any advice! |
Sounds like that should be perfectly fine. Not that I've been in years, but most of the time you will see people in almost anything.

It's nice that you want to dress up a little - but you will see most people in practically anything - unless it's the open night of the opera or ballet.

Thank you both. Here in our mid-size southern city, we see everything from jeans to ballgowns at opera and symphony performances -- but I didn't want to be hugely over- or under-dressed for Carnegie. Thanks for confirming that our wardrobe choices will be safe!

When we were there last year for a concert, we dressed up a little--sport coat and tie for DH and silk pantsuit for me. People around us were wearing jeans and sweaters or casual work clothes, and were generally very very casual. We didn't feel out of place, but we also didn't need to lug the dress-up clothes to New York.

There are 3 halls in Carnegie "Hall", Daddy bear (Stern), Momma bear (Zankel) and Baby bear (Weill).
Dress runs the gamut in all halls and in the big hall, I would guess it would matter less how you dress. Since Zankel is the newer hall, I notice people dress more fashionably since the artists performing there are usually younger. What you suggested sounds fine, and is probably a little notch up than most. I'm not an old geezer, yet, but I do lament on the lack of dress code nowadays at venues like CH. There are some tacky tacky outfits out there. |
