Attention NYC shoppers...

We're losing another old friend. After 30 years of business, Canal Jeans is closing its doors. So long to a really great store.

The store was never the same since it moved from it's original location.
Bloomingdales will be opening a store in that entire building.

Daniel Nov 4th, 2002 10:14 AM

When is that going to happen?
I wanted to check out that store early December...

Remembering Nov 4th, 2002 10:24 AM

Your thread reminds me of; Altmans, Gimbels, A&S, Klien's, Korvettes, TSS, Mays, Alexanders, Martins, Woolworth, Montegomery Ward, Grants, Orbachs, Goodwins, Franklin Simon, Bonwit Teller, Arnold Constable, WJ Sloane, Lafayette, Trader Horn, SaveMart, Bohack, Caldors, all great retail names that have long since passed into memory.

Does anyone have any other "big names" to add to the New York retailing graveyard?

to Remembering: I still miss B. Altman! That was the best, classiest store, NY has nothing like it now. I still think about it fondly every time I pass that great old building on 34th Street. Those were the days! I also remember Korvettes on 14th St and Alexander's uptown, with less fondness. But I did shop there when I was young, new to the city and broke! ;-)

Also to add to your list: Best & Co.

I don't think that Canal Jeans fits into the category of "great" or iconic retailers to go out of business, but to each his/her own, I guess...
