Attending the Tony Awards
 

Has anyone been? I know that tickets go on sale the day of nominations in May. But since we'll be in New York the night of the awards, thought it might be fun to go. The official Tony website answers "what do I wear" with "The Tony Awards are a black tie event", but do people in the general seating area really wear black tie? Wouldn't a coat and tie be OK? I find it hard to imagine that the general public attending really dresses up. Maybe I'm wrong?

Yes - my understanding is that without black tie you will be turned away.

Patrick, I stayed very near Radio City Music Hall a couple of years ago the week of the Tony Awards. It was the year The Producers swept the Tony Awards. I saw no suits and only tuxedos. It is a very dressy affair.

What struck me as odd was that so many people walked (Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Bette Midler, Richard Dryfuss) and I saw very few limos.

I think New York is sort of a dressy town.

I have not been but know several people who have. Most people are in formal wear but you won't be turned away for not wearing a tuxedo. A dark suit is acceptable. You will be sitting with other "civilians" who have purchased tickets and also with B'way cast members who are offered discount tickets to the event. I think the performers usually wear formal attire.

hmmm. Well it may be a meaningless question anyway. I just realized that I already have theatre tickets for that Sunday night -- off Broadway, AltarBoyz. And I don't plan to take a tuxedo to sit in the rear of Radio City Music Hall balcony where I really couldn't see much anyway. Just sounded like a fun thing to do.

Patrick, if you decide to go, I do not believe that tuxedos are mandatory.
