Atlantic City to Raleigh, NC
Traveling week of 4/10. Want to take a more scenic route than 95S (which we have traveled numerous times). Is Cape May to Lewes, Delaware via ferry, then 13S to Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, continuing to Raleigh, NC a good option? Any recommended stops, if doing this in one day?
Thank you. |
The eastern shore route is a beautiful alternative to I-95. I take it all the time when I go up to the shore. I can't tell you the best way to get from the CBBT to 95 or 85 because I always go up from Williamsburg to 295 and then to 85. I guess you could take 189 from 64.
It will take you a little under 4 hours from Lewes to Virginia Beach. I always go 24 to 113 then to 13. There are a few places to stop including Chincoteague and Assateague and the CBBT bridge itself. Just to warn you against sticker shock, the CBBT costs $12 to cross. Make sure you are out of Norfolk/VABeach before 4 pm if you are traveling during the week. The traffic is horrible. |
Without looking at a map and depending on how much time, if you are coming through Chesapeake into the upper Outer Banks, just take the time to go through the Outer Banks spending the night in Ocracoke and then take the ferry to either Swan Quarter or Cedar Island and make it to Raleigh from there. But that could add more than a day to your trip

Good advice, depending on how much time you have.
There is no really good way to get from the CBBT to Raleigh, but any route, no matter how direct, is not pleasant if it takes you through Rocky Mount. If I had to do it again, I would do what Birdie says. The ferry is wonderful, by the way. |
I will look into all these suggestions. Thank you for responding. I'm late getting back on here because I was away for a few days.
Is Ocracoke a destination in itself or more a way to travel part of Outer Banks to get to the ferry? I will research it now. I've never been to the Outer Banks, so this sounds like a good suggestion. Virgina Beach to Ocracoke must be slow going, so Atlantic City to Ocracoke is probably too rushed for one day. Does an overnight around Virgina Beach and then overnight in Ocracoke make sense?
