Atlantic City
 

Hi, we will be stopping in Atlantic City for one day, staying overnight en route to NYC. Any suggestions for things to do? We don't want to spend all our time gambling. Is there a beach nearby? And any recommendations for places to eat? <BR><BR>Thx!

I don't mean to sound overly rude, but come on now, Tina.....is there a beach near AC?<BR><BR>You're either a very poor troll poster or else you are beyond inexperienced.<BR><BR>Is there anything to do in AC besides gambling?<BR>Sure.<BR>Play spot the hookers, fend off the drug dealers, dodge the syringes and dead fish on the beach, and count your blessings that you have a car to take you out of town the next day.

First, I would ignore the previous poster, who felt some need to insult you personally, which says a lot about the character of a person and probably the quality of their advice in general. That being said, if you want to really enjoy the beach near AC, head one town south to Ventnor--the beaches are wide and clean and you can avoid the casino crowds. I'd recommend eating in Margate at Tomatos--it's the best place around by far.

zzz probably lost a lot of money at the casinos or is a hooker herself. I've been to AC a few times recently and there are no hookers and dead fish or syringes. It's not the best place to hang out but Caesars is a nice casino.

Most people come onto this website for insight and information, not to poke fun at others. If you're going to be judgemental, then don't bother to post at all!

If you have never been to AC you might want to avoid it.<BR>It's about gambling and nothing else.<BR><BR>Thgere are much nicer beach areas along the Jersey coast.

There really isn't much to do in Atlantic City except gamble and if you walk any distance away from the boardwalk you run into slums. <BR><BR>My advice would be to go to Ocean City, NJ, which is about 10 miles away from AC. It has a nice little boardwalk and there is a restaurant "Chatterbox" which serves great tasting breakfasts. <BR><BR>

Tina until you've been to AC you really have no way of knowing why people are responding they way they have.<BR>After you've been there you might have a better idea.<BR>Most people are just trying to warn you that it's not the most popular destination for sightseers. It's mostly for gamblers weekending from NYC area.

I'm not a big AC fan either, but my husband and I enjoyed biking south of the casino area, where we looked at the big old homes along the coast. If you don't have bikes, it might be a nice place for a walk. I think there's some kind of famous (fake) elephant down there, too, but I didn't really get the significance of it. Enjoy.

I lived in the Atlantic City area for 30 years. Don't pay any attention to the naysayers. Going to the beach presents two options--either stay at a beach hotel and it's out your front door (actually the back--you usually have to walk through the casino to get to the boardwalk). The beaches are nice and there is no shortage of good restaurants in any of the casinos. The second option is stay at an off-beach hotel, such as Harrah's (very nice hotel--again good restaurants) and go to the beach in Margate--a 15 minute drive--very nice beaches.

Asking someone from New Jersey to define what makes for a nice beach is like asking someone from North Dakota about good French restaurants.

Excuse me, but WHY should anyone ignore the posters who have negative things to say about AC? We went to a wedding near there several years ago, so thought we would check it out since we were practically driving through. I have never seen such a dump in my entire life. It was disgusting, dirty, rundown and beyond ugly. The only people I saw looked like they just stepped out of a trailer park.<BR><BR>Don't waste your time, really. Stayaway is right, spend the extra time in NYC.

About beaches I am not ignorant, Ann.<BR>I've been to the Gold Coast of Australia, the best of the Caribbean (St. John, Anguilla, Turks), St. Tropez, all the Hawaiian islands, the better Mexican beaches, etc.<BR><BR>There is not a single Atlantic Coast beach which rates as a 'good beach' if you've travelled outside the US (though I'll except Nantucket, MV and the Cape for beauty but not swimmability).

I agree that I probably wouldn't go to AC for the beach. But I live an hour away and when my mom comes into town we do go down very occasionally to play the slots for a few hours. If you like to gamble and don't want to invest a lot of time it's not a bad way to spend a few hours. But for the beach and boards, I would go to Ocean City. There is an Irish bar/restaurant right off the boardwalk in AC(can't remember the name) that was very reasonably priced for a quick lunch.
