Atlanta with our dog?
 

We're driving to Atlanta for a long weekend getaway - can anyone recommend a good hotel near the downtown attractions that will accept pets (a small dog)? Any recommendations for places we can take him along with us (yes, we take him on vacations with us, he's our child!). I was looking at Centennial Park, any other pet friendly locations? Are pets allowed at Stone Mountain?

My chow mix, 30 lbs., goes with me to Atlanta at least once and sometimes twice a month for 4 to 5 days. Not sure about downtown attraction hotels -- Drury Suites, Norcross and Virginia Avenue, Red Roof on Virginia Avenue, LaQuinta in Norcross are probably the nicer motels that accept pets with no hassles. You can take a pet to Stone Mountain as long as he/she is on a leash, but there are a few areas where pets are not allowed. In general, Atlantians seem to take their dogs most places and I assume that goes for Centennial Park as well. Lakewood Antique Market (second week end) sometimes has more dogs than people.

I did a search on Starwood.com to confirm that the Westin Downtown allows pets. It does - and so does the Sheraton Atlanta Downtown (Courtland at International). I'd choose the Westin between those two.

Another option would be the Midtown area. The Sheraton at Colony Square allows pets and it is RIGHT AT Piedmont Park - THE big grassy public park in Atlanta. I prefer that area to Downtown.

Check starwood.com, choose extra option and the pets allowed box. You'll see all their hotels in Atlanta that allow pets.

I usually stay at LaQuinta Inn and Suites when traveling with my pup in the SE, but as birgator says, the LQ's are in the suburbs - not downtown.

Dogs are allowed in the outside dining area of the Park Tavern at Piedmont Park. Great drinks and beer.

Went "out on the town" and was too wired to sleep.

kriskate, pull up biddingfortravel (or similar) to check out the Midtown locations and call or google to see which allow dogs. I personally like Midtown better than Downtown - especially with a pup. Being just steps away from Piedmont Park is THE place to be with a dog in Atlanta. The Wyndham is very nice, a bit further from the park though. There are other good choices in the area too.

The Sheraton is hard to beat on many points - locations, parking, AND a great Thai restaurant just steps away (okay, that's too important to me! ;-)

syd, are you the one that mentioned Park Tavern for an Atlanta GTG? We ought to seriously think about doing one.

yes, it was me and yes, we should figure something out. Which would be better for those Atlanta Fodorites out there -- a Thursday after work thing or a weekend evening? I should probably post this on its own --

I tried - with the success of a lead balloon. But, I'm game if we decide to do one. Either a weeknight or weekend would work for me - as long as I have notice (travel schedule).
