Atlanta Vacation in January

My wife and I will be travelling to Atlanta in January 2022 and are looking for attractions and restaurants suggestions are unique to Atlanta. We won't be renting a car, will be relying on uber/bus to get around, and will be staying near Emory University. In addition, my wife will be in business day meetings all week so I am also looking for additional affordable "time killing" activities I can visit during the day.

Attractions we'd like to see are:
  • Georgia Aquarium
  • World of Coca-Cola
  • National Center for Civil and Human Rights
  • Centennial Olympic Park
  • CNN Tour (currently closed due to Covid)
  • Atlanta Center for Disease Control & Prevention (currently closed due to Covid)

Time killing activities:
  • Explore downtown
  • Martin Luther King Jr Historical Park
  • Krog Street tunnel
  • Atlanta Beltline
  • Atlanta Monetary Museum
  • Georgia State University
  • Emory University
  • Oakland Cemetery
  • Governor's Mansion (currently closed due to Covid)
  • Underground Atlanta

Restaurants:
  • Chick-fil-A
  • Shake Shack
  • Slutty Vegan Restaurant
  • Mary Mac's Tea House

Foods to try:
  • Soul/southern food
  • Peaches
  • Fried chicken
  • Peach cobbler

An hour east is historic, lively Madison. "It has stunning architecture and endless Southern hospitality at one of Georgia’s largest historic districts."

Hi icu222much,

I visited Atlanta without a car a few years ago, using only MARTA and my two feet; interestingly enough, the favourite parts of my visit did not make your list. These were the High Museum of Art and the Botanical Gardens. These I was able to walk to from my hotel near the Arts Center MARTA metro station in midtown; downtown to midtown is easy on MARTA. World of Coca Cola feels more like one has entered a world of Coke advertising and marketing, not really my thing although the area on the history of Coke and Pemberton was mildly interesting. Might appeal to some as there's a room where they have fountains to try Coke products from all round the world and you can have your picture taken with the Coke polar bear-- it wouldn't be my top recommendation for those visiting Atlanta.

Wishing you a pleasant trip!

Daniel

You can cross peaches off your food list. While in-season local orchard picked southern peaches are amazing, you won’t find good ones in January. Cobblers will be made of frozen peaches. Do find a really good biscuit and try stone ground grits but I’ll find you and slap your hand if you add sugar to your grits.

We loved the Midtown area. It’s filled with cool restaurants and bars.

Would you consider renting a bike? I think there are some great trails in Atlanta.
