Now L, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Underground Atlanta one of the original areas that's left from the Civil War? I'm surprised you would treat such a thing so lightly.
As for the stadium, granted in the end it wasn't a great baseball stadium, but it was an example of late 1960's American baseball stadium architecture (a rare thing nowadays) and represented Atlanta's sports history: "Hammerin' Hank", the rise and fall (and rise...and fall) of the Braves, Chief Nokahoma (or however it was spelled), Steve Bartkowski, etc. It would be nice if a father could've taken his kids there and said "I was here when..." like they can do in Chicago, New York and Boston, but apparently a new Olympic Stadium/Turner Field with a view of the skyline is more important.
But at the end of the day, this is just my opinion. If all of you who live in Atlanta love it, then who am I to rain on your parade? Just make sure you all take lots of pictures, because that special place you know and love today may be a Marriott tomorrow.

I thought we were helping the Comptons out with their transportation problem. Unfortunately, public trans is not really an option, especially with luggage. I would certainly call to check on the Avis chaffeur angle, or check with your hotel if you are staying in one.
Two things to consider, however: cabs tend to be pricey in Atlanta as compared to a lot of other cities, and depending on the time of day from Courtland to the Amtrak station can be a really long drive due to traffic (especially on the interstate through the city!)
And to Rhett and L, the GWTW theater is gone because it burned. Atlanta's symbol is the phoenix. We rose from the ashes and for better or worse we have always been a city of progress, pre- and post-war.
