Agree with everyone that Midtown is a more appealing place to stay than downtown for a tourist. Also agree that you should avoid Underground.
If you are looking for a pleasant neighborhood to walk around in the evening, check out Virginia-Highland, which is east of midtown on the other side of Piedmont Park. It would be a short cab ride, but there are many restaurants and nightlife options there, clustered around the intersection of Virginia/N. Highland (hence the name) and Greenwood/N. Highland.

Good grief.
It is obvious the kind of trip the OP wants to take and it's easy to understand why he includes Montgomery.
No one is saying Montegomery is the best SE city to visit - but he wants to take a day trip to visit museums. Via bus, no less. Let him have the trip HE wants.
