Atlanta/Buckhead Attractions
 

We are taking a long weekend trip to the Atlanta/Buckhead area. We will be seeing a Braves game, the New Coca Cola museum, aquarium, cnn tour. Am I missing anything? Also, we are traveling with two children 11 and 14 and would like to know if there are any fun themed restaurants in the area. We are staying in Buckhead.

They may like ESPN Zone on Peachtree right in Buckhead. R Thomas is also a fun place in midtown with great food and burgers and lots of exotic birds!

We liked the Atlanta History Center, the Martin Luther King, Jr sites, and the Carter Library.

I hope you are planning on a trip after May 26 as we were in Atlanta last week and May 27 was the scheduled opening of the Coca Cola musuem.

Ditto, on the Carter center presidential library. Should be fun and informative for the kids, too.

If you have a car the Varsity Restaurant at 75N and Northside Dr. has been an attraction since the 50's that's a drive in style burger and dog place. Very famous in Atlanta and the kids should like it. Hopefully you are planning on taking MARTA on some of your excursions. The subway can be an adventure if you don't have one at home. There is a Six Flags W of Atlanta on I 20. Stone Mountain state park is a beautiful place, but may not have enough action for teenagers.

Have a great time! We enjoyed our anniversary trip to Atlanta in April and also went to a Braves game and the aquarium. We really enjoyed Piedmont Park and the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. Excellent gardens! Have fun!

If you eat at R. Thomas, when done, step next door to Huey's (if it's still there) and get a dozen fresh beignets, best north of New Orleans..made to order...yum

Huey's is still there and the beingets are great! There is really no themed restaurants in the Buckhead area that I can think of but you might enjoy Atlantic Station for dinner.

For me Phipps Plaza and Lenox Mall are huge Do Not Miss attractions.

As far as theme restaurants go, I love the goofyness of Dante's Down The Hatch!

Huey's is ok not great. Same for R Thomas. Good if you are in that area. If you want to go to N Atlanta-- Dave & Busters has games,arcade stuff and food-- for families. Also north there is this speedway and rope course for kids. It has TONS to do there--- also has a restaurant. I can't remember the name.It's something speedway-- look it up.
---Piedmont Park usually has festivals on the weekend-this could be fun. There may be a link to it. Also, the Varsity- as someone referred-- is a spot to hit. Cafe Intermezzo-- just HUGE desserts- is a touristy spot.
Mary Mac's is famous for their southern food and has pics of famous people on the walls.

Grew up in Atlanta enjoying the Varsity drive-in restaurant and Tech football. However, the Varsity is located on North Avenue (not Northside Drive) and was established in 1928, doubtless many years before Stumpworks73 (or I) dined anywhere. It's rumored that the grease used to this day to cook the fries and o-rings is original. There's an outpost of the Varsity ("Jr.") close to Buckhead (itself more a state of mind than a geographic area) at Lindbergh Drive and Cheshire Bridge Road.

We returned from our trip this evening and had a great time. We stayed at the Ritz Carlton in Buckhead which was convenient to Phipps Plaza which has high end stores and restaurants and on the other side was the Lenox Mall which had Macys, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, etc. They were definitely something to see. Also in walking distance was Target, Filene's Basement and some other stores. We did the CNN Tour which was nothing spectacular but interesting. Friday night we went to the Braves game which was a lot of fun. The stadium is really nice and we enjoyed the Braves museum. On Saturday we went to the Georgia Aquarium which we had bought tickets for in advance with a 9:00 am reservation. It was a good thing we had our tickets because even at 9:00 the place was packed. The line to get in was around the corner. It was packed by the time we left mid-afternoon. After that we had tickets for the New Coca Cola Museum. It was the grand opening weekend of the new location and there were a lot of festivities going on in the area. There were different booths with samples of different coke products. It is definitely something to check out. We did eat at the Varsity. Definitely get the orange cream drink - delicious! One day we ate at the Buckhead Diner, which is a lot nicer than a regular diner and the waiters and waitresses are dressed in tuxedo's. It was a fun long weekend. Thanks for all your help!

Glad you had a great time in Atlanta. Yep, the Buckhead Diner isn't much of a "diner"! One of the best restaurants in Atlanta. That's for the trip report!
