I don't understand the east/west designation. I would choose based on the hotel.
To take MARTA to dinner, you'd have to take the hotel shuttle back to the airport and then take MARTA to downtown - or wherever you are heading for dinner. Personally, I'd rather grab a cab - but MARTA would work.

There are several clusters of hotels around the airport, so perhaps you could tell us who lists the hotels as east/west so we can tell how some are classified?
I guess Virgina Avenue hotels would be east. I've never particularly liked that area even though it is near the Delta HQ and other respectable businesses. Busy street. Lots of newer hotels have been built in this area in recent years, so maybe someone with more recent experience can give you up-to-date advice.
I guess Sullivan Avenue hotels would be classified as west. That is a cluster of hotels and low rise industrial/office. One or two restaurants thrown in.
Further southwest is Old National Highway. Do not consider that area.
There are other scattered hotels that are not in these 3 clusters.
Most people do choose based on the specific hotels in this area more than east/west as none of the neighborhoods are particularly attractive.
