Hi,
Need good advice on a simple plan. Will be arriving in Asheville nc in July for one night. Approximate arrival time 4pm. Would like to do something of interest in the evening. I understand that the biltmore estate closes at 4h30pm so that is out of the question. Wondering about chimney rock, but it closes at 5h30pm somewhat short on time! Would a drive towards smokey mountains at dusk be recommended? The next day, we plan on spending driving along blue ridge parkway to blowing rock. But I'd like to get the most out of the one evening in Asheville. Would appreciate all help!

Since you will be driving to Blowing Rock the next day, I suggest you stay downtown at the Haywood Park Hotel and then get out and walk Asheville. It is a fun town and there are lots of things going on. Reserve in advance, hotels get very busy in the summer. Belle Cher is a huge event so if your dates coincide, reserve now.

I, too would just explore the city, you'll not have time to really get anywhere to do outdoor type activities. That being said, I highly recommend Chimney Rock if time allows.

Just a Blowing Rock recommendation...

If you're not familiar with Blowing Rock and looking for a nice place to eat, I highly recommend Storie Street Grille. The have a great menu and of all things I really like their house salad. That said I'm a steak guy and they always have some sort of great steak on the menu.

The owner normally works the bar and if you get there early will chat with you while you're waiting to sit.

Asheville is a neat little town. It's called the "paris of the south" Lots of character, nice restaurants in all price ranges.
It has the most Art Deco buildings outside Miami.
Go to the Grove Park Inn for a drink on the terrace and watch the sunset on the Blue Ridge. It's as historic as Biltmore - from the 1920's.

If you are interested in going to Chimney Rock, the ticket plaza hours are 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, BUT the park stays open for an additional 1 1/2 hours. As long as you purchase tickets before 5:30 pm, you should have at least a couple of hours to walk around. Sunset is listed at after 8:00 pm for the area. Just a thought... and the website even offers suggested itineraries for short time periods.

I am planning a trip up the BRP July 19-24 and am planning to stop at Chimney Rock in the late afternoon. We are driving from Florida, so... the hiking will be a great treat after 10 hours in the car!!!
