Asheville, NC - Is A Car Necessary?
My husband and I are going to Asheville, NC, for three days in August. We are planning on staying downtown, with a trip to Biltmore Estate and maybe the Grove Park Inn for lunch or the spa. We are flying into Asheville Regional Airport. We plan to check out the sights downtown and sampling the eating establishments. Do we need a car for this type of trip. Any help is greatly appredciated!

I can't imagine not having a car. The airport is about 30 miles outside of town in and of itself.

I would recommend a car. I visit the area frequently and think that without a car you will be frustrated.

A big draw of Asheville is the beautiful surrounding countryside, so I'd want the freedom to explore it.

A car, it is! My map had the airport much closer. A cab ride would have cost as much as the rental! I think we may want to go drive the Blue Ridge Parkway, as well. Thanks to all for replying.

I think you will be very glad of the decision to rent a car. The Blue Ridge Parkway (and the excellent craft center on it) is an essential stop on a visit to Asheville. I also recommend a side trip to Black Mountain, have lunch at the Veranda and enjoy a walk around. Wonderful area you are sure to love and will want to visit again.

The Asheville airport is less than 15 miles from downtown, but I agree that you do want a car.
