Asheville lovers unite!
Have been poking around the entire website collecting ideas for an upcoming trip to Asheville and am surprised how hard it is to find in the "regular" (non-talk-forums) part of fodors.com.
You have to know enough to look under "Blue Ridge Mountains" to even find a reference to it. There, it's one of several locations listed under "restaurants" and "sights and activities" along the hundreds of miles of the BR Pkway. Under the "Hotels" section, it's not even listed as a location! The august, pricey "Grove Park Inn is just listed as a "sight and activity!" Would you do that for the Plaza in NYC? Let's ask the editors to recognize Asheville as distinct from all of the BR Pkwy area! At the very least, they could say "Asheville AND the Blue Ridge Parkway." For both the website and the guidebooks, too! |
Given some of the frequent posters here perhaps if they called it, "Biltmore, the house, the furniture, etc., and oh by the way this place nearby called Asheville" you'd have better luck |
The Grove Park Inn, to me, is a sight and an activity.
The spa, the Great Hall, the tennis and golf, the dining, the car museum, etc. |
I disagree, since those visiting Asheville often include visits to Black Mountain, Lake Lure, Chimney Rock, Mount Mitchell, Brevard, Hendersonville, Flat Rock and even Saluda. I don't think there is a need for a separate forum for each of the above destinations.
|
No no no -- NOT talking about a separate forum!
I'm talking about going to the OTHER part of this website, where you look up "destinations, hotels, restaurants" as a guide, the way you'd consult a Fodors guidebook. And the Grove Park can certainly be a "sight," but I challenge any of you to go to the regular, non-talk part of this website and find lodging for Asheville. And image if you are from the West Coast or somewhere outside the US and want to see if you might want to visit Asheville during a visit to NC. If you didn't know enough to look under "Blue Ridge Parkway," you wouldn't find it. |
... make that "imagine" ...
If you're not "from around these parts," how would you find a hotel in Asheville (of which there are plenty)? |
Never noticed this, but it is odd that Asheville's not got its own listing. Think I found my last B&B there via another "trip-advising" website. Hey, editors, you want people going there instead? ;-)

Topping.
Where are all the Asheville mavens? |
didn't stay at the Grove Park...only had drinks there......but it was LOVELY!
|
I think you are right, HKP. Asheville needs to be recognized in the area designation under destinations. You might write the editors directly. Katie and Doug are on top of suggestions they receive from posters.

I just found this while looking for something else, HKP, and wanted to let you know that we stayed at the Haywood Park Hotel, a nice downtown Asheville hotel right after Christmas 2007. Full description of same:
