Asheville and Elon, NC plus Roanoke, VA
One more college visit question (we are almost done, I hope). Is there any reasonable geographic way to fly into somewhere to see these 3 colleges. Even into one city and out of another would work, driving between the 3 places. Would prefer to spend only 2 nights and want to be as efficient time wise as possible.
Also, does anyone want to adopt my 16 year old dtr and my husband who is encouraging visiting every college in North America - or is that a question for the Lounge section? |
Roanoke has an airport, don't know about the other two places.
What school is she seeing in Roanoke? Because as I recall the other VA colleges she looked at were rather rigorous academic programs that are well-known throughout VA; Roanoke college is not. Or is she looking at Hollins? Good luck in your continued search. |
Fly into Roanoke, drive 220 to Greensboro, I-40 to Elon. Then I-40 to Asheville and Blue Ridge Parkway (if not closed for winter) back to Roanoke or fly out of Asheville.
Or fly into Greensboro or Asheville and loop as necessary. Sorry, not looking to adopt. |
Thanks. FYI she is considering Roanoke College as a safety school - she and her father had already planned a short trip to see UNC Asheville and Elon but now Roanoke has been calling and sending her info saying they have a non-binding early action thing where you apply by 8/15 and hear by Labor Day. She has now become intrigued with the idea of having been accepted somewhere before she starts her senior year in HS.

If you're looking a Elon, you should also check out UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke, NC State, Wake Forest, Guilford, UNC- Greensboro...I'm sure I'm forgetting some other good schools...why don't you take a month off?
BTW, schlegal1 is absolutely correct. Greensboro, Asheville, and Roanoke have good air service...Greensboro being the largest. |
Sorry, meant to say ncgrrl is correct about going in/out any of these cities.
|
Jimingso - just what we need - thanks a lot - more schools to visit. Why limit the trip to a month. Perhaps she should take an entire year off between HS and college to visit not only every college in North America but in the world.
|
Gail: Maybe you'd rather have my problem...getting my rising HS senior son off his Playstation long enough to visit anywhere!
|
Ohhh, the difference between sons and daughters.
Jimingso - Once they visit and pick a college you worry that they'll put down the play station enough to go to class. Gail - Please tell us how she liked Roanoke and Elon. I'm bringing DD down there myself this fall. Your dtr is correct about an acceptance before senior year. They seem to relax after that first acceptance. |
My son (just finished junior year at Savannah College of Art and Design) never did put down Playstation, computer games - he is majoring in computer animation, teaching it at a summer computer camp, and may even have job prospects when he graduates. (And he visited only 2 colleges, applied to 3 and off he went). As one wise father said "girls just like to shop"

Fly into Charlotte. Two hours to Asheville. Come back through Charlotte. Hour and a half to Elon, then on up to Roanoke, if you must. There's going to be some backtracking with this itinerary.
|
Good luck! Also, I didn't mean to bash Roanoke college--it just seemed out of synch with schools your dtr previously saw. It sounds like having it as a safety school makes perfect sense.
