art for my wall? (from NYC)
 

Is it possible to find original artwork sold on the streets? I am looking for a painting or print, or a nice photo, for under $150.

I am headed to NYC next weekend for one day and would love to find a special piece of artwork.

There are always (weather permitting) artists selling their wares near the Met (Fifth Ave & 8oth). Some of it is nice - especially the photos. I especially like the photos of NY scenes particularly those in Central Park or famous buildings. You can buy the art or photos unframed - that will bring the cost down. There are other areas where art is sold (Union Square closer to 14th St comes to mind) and art shows too. Check NY magazine or Timeout NY when you arrive. There are also individual vendors that set up randomly around the city.

I should also add that there are people selling junk that was perhaps original art in a previous life!

Agree that in front of the Met is one good place to look. Next weekend (Memorial Day) is also the big annual Washington Square art show.

Also in Chinatown, you can find some original art paintings and silk hangings. I bought a beautiful silk and thread large piece for $30 several years ago and love it.

mclaurie - glad to read about Wash Sq - I thought with renovation in the area that it might be moved.

There are over two hundred living artists selling their own work at the Brooklyn Waterfront Artist's Coalition Pier Show in Red Hook on weekends until middle of June.

But, you'll see tables of all sorts all over. Some is better than others. And, most is quite inexpensive.

If I love it and the price is favorable...

There are some excellent photographs. Best bet is to look around a bit (as you'll see some of it everywhere) and compare prices. But, sometimes a vendor will have really unique items not found elsewhere.
