Arriving in Maui late at night

Hello everyone,

My husband and I will be arriving in HNL at 6pm and plan on flying to Maui that night so that we arrive somewhat late at night (close to 10pm). We plan on staying at the Sheraton in Lahaina and I am wondering whether we should spend the night near the Kahulai airport and then get our rental car the following day and drive to the Sheraton, or if we should drive out to Lahaina the same night? Does anyone have any suggestions? Is the road from the airport to Lahaina tricky?

Thanks so much.

Find out if the car rental desk will be open when your flight arrives. I think most of them stay open until 10 pm. If it is, get your car and drive to the Sheraton that night. The road is fine and it is only about a 45 minute drive.

Just pick up your rental and drive to the Sheraton. There is no place near the airport I would want to bother staying in.

I agree with the previous posters. It's not a tricky drive, so if you've got a car, go for it!

One more thing, the Sheraton will be a few miles after you pass through the actual town of Lahaina.

Agree, Agree. The hotels near the airport are less then first rate. The road to Lahaina is not bad at all. You will be missing the scenery but there will be another chance for that. You will be happy you made the effort.

We flew from the east coast to HNL and on to Maui that night. We were delayed in HNL so we arrived Maui even later than planned (around 9:30 PM) and I was concerned about it. We had a car reserved with National and had no problem at all. National helped us with directions and we drove to our condo quite easily. Try to fly Hawaiian Airlines if you can.

We've done the drive many times. The roads are well traveled, albeit a little winding, but nothing challenging.

ENJOY!
