Arizona Resorts in January
 

We (3 - late 20's women) would like to escape the harsh Minnesota winter in January and are considering a trip to one of Arizona's resorts. How is the weather in the Scottsdale/Phoenix area in mid-January and will the pools/waterfalls be open? We plan to stay at either the Pointe Tapatio Hilton or the Sheraton Desert Oasis. <BR><BR>We would appreciate any input or suggestions that you have to offer.<BR><BR>Thank you.

The weather is usually sunny and pleasant--pants and long sleeves though. I usually wear a light leather jacket in the evenings. Only Canadians and Minnesotans think the weather is balmy enough to swim--you should be fine. The pools are all heated, it's just the air temperature that keeps most of us out of the water. If you like nightclubs and restaurants and shops, you might want to find a resort closer into downtown Scottsdale. You should have a blast!

Just wanted to chime in and agree with the previous poster. As a woman who just recently left my late 20's, I can tell you that if I were on vacation with a few girlfriends, I'd want to stay closer to the action. The Pointe at Tapatio will be nice, and scenic, but I'd opt for somewhere in Scottsdale, like Sandy said. Do a search on hotels/resorts in Scottsdale, specifically on Scottsdale Rd. I know there are many resorts there, with pools, spas, close to shopping, restaurants, and a short drive to some fun clubs. If you have more specific questions, post them and I'll check back. And, yes, it will be too cool for swimming.

As a Phoenix resident, I concur with the above two posts. During the day you will be okay in jeans and short sleeve shirts, but will need a jacket in the morning and evening. I wouldn't swim in January, but my kids do in our unheated pool. Also, just because the resort says they heat their pools, they are never as warm as they say they are. You would definitely be happier staying at a Scottsdale resort. Two brand new ones just opened up. Supposed to be spectacular! (The biggest in the world???) I know one is in the Kierland area of Scottsdale. Do an internet search and I'm sure you'll find them. Have fun. Phoenix and Scottsdale are wonderful places to visit.

Thank you for the responses. I will do more research about resorts closer to Scottsdale. I didn't realize that the two I mentioned were not in the general Scottsdale area. I appreciate the advice about the weather. We would love to stay at a beautiful resort and take in the scenary. Perhaps we'll have to postpone our Arizona trip to April/May and look closer at Florida resorts for the winter.<BR><BR>

I think when people say "stay in or closer to Scottsdale," the mean stay closer to Old Scottsdale, which has more of a city environment. Scottsdale itself is sort of a big suburb, but Old Scottsdale is made for walking around.

The Arizona resorts would probably be warmer in January than Florida would be. South Florida and the Keys can be chilly in January. I would fly to the Caribbean.
