Arizona in late January
 

Hello all! My husband and I would like to get away in late January. We would like a mild weathered, active vacation with a serene setting. We like to stay in nice hotels but do not want to break the bank. The reason I was thinking of Arizona is because I THINK I can accomplish everything mentioned above. Scottsdale seems to be the warmest area, but I have never been there and am not sure how much of a city it is vs. being able to go hiking and do "touristy" things. I visited Sedona as a child and dream of going back, but it seems it might be too cold...but there are conflicting views! If anyone has visited Arizona in the winter and has information to share, thoughts, feelings, I'd really appreciate it.

I found Scottsdale a bit of a bump on Phoenix with lots of traffic. I found Tucson warm, less traffic, plenty to keep you active.

Sedona would be "warm" for me with highs typically in the 40's and 50's, but I live where it is often much colder than that.

Tucson would be a bit cooler than Scottsdale. But much less of a big city atmosphere. Lots of hiking very close to town, and lost to see and do. Check my blog for "to-do" ideas. Some of the links and info are a bit dated. I have been remiss on keeping it updated, but it covers much of what is to be seen in southern Arizona.

Sedona will be much colder as you stated. I have been there when it snowed in March.
I avoid Phoenix and Scottsdale except for the Mayo Clinic. It is like a version of LA. Tucson has more of what you are looking for.

Thank you, all! i am leaning towards Sedona...I have been to Tuscon also though and will certainly look into it as well despite the chillier weather. Any other ideas are always welcome :).

I live in Mesa and I agree with HappyTrvlr that Phoenix/Scottsdale is like a version of LA, especially in the winter. The population probably almost doubles with winter visitors because the weather is so mild. There is no visible distinction between all the cities in the Phoenix metro area, other than the street signs. I personally am looking to move in the near future because of the traffic, but if that would not be a concern, then yes, it averages 5-10 degrees warmer than Tucson. Scottsdale is one of the most upscale cities in the Phoenix metro area.

I would prefer to go somewhere less city-like. I am deciding between Tuscon and Sedona now. Thanks!
