Area 51

I will be in the Arizona/Neveda area in February with my 12 year old son. He is dying to see Area 51 but I'm not sure if it is worth the drive. (We would be driving from Las Vegas that day) I'm thinking it would probably take about 2 hours or so to drive each way to see signs and a mailbox. Is there anyone out there that can tell me if it is worth a trip in their opinion and why? I would appreciate your input! Thanks!

Kat,

I think your assessment of what you're likely to see for your trouble is pretty accurate. While I have not personlly taken this drive, I have a few friends who have--two of whom were fined for ignoring signage in the area and getting out of their car. Not only were they fined but they were also detained for a full day.

From what they've told me, you really can't see much of anything from the road. This is why many people get out of their cars and try to hike in: I've never heard of anyone attempting this who wasn't caught and punished. Furthermore, there are (supposedly) posted signs stating that the use of "lethal force" can be used against individuals seeking to trespass in the "area."

I wouldn't advise this particular sidetrip.

Ask about day tours at your hotel's travel desk. I like the helicopter tours better than the bus tours, but they are more pricey.

We've driven the Extraterrestrial Highway (Hwy 375) many times and there isn't much to see. We never tried to get into Area 51. Here are some links that will give you an idea of what to expect.

It will probably take all day to drive there and back considering the days are so short in February.

Area 33 is better. It's lesser known and little creatures are usually sighted right away.
