Are you a Yankee or a Rebel?

Fun and interesting story today on NPR.

A linguistics expert has develped a test that'll show if you're a Yankee or a Rebel based on how you pronounce certain words and also phrases you commonly use.

I'm a Yankee. If you want to try, here's the link to the test:

A Yankee...who has people at work bugging me all of the time to say certain words so they can all snicker at my "accent"!

SAnParis Jun 20th, 2006 06:58 AM

A Yankee @ 59%, I guess my living in the South for over 10 years is starting to rub off.

lizziea06 Jun 20th, 2006 07:01 AM

79% Yankee...

BeachBoi Jun 20th, 2006 07:13 AM

YIKES......73% Dixie!! WAY too much time in TEXAS!! My necks gettin' a bit pink.....:D........or would that be "paink"............

18% Dixie. Wow! You are a Duke of Yankeedom!

JJ5 Jun 20th, 2006 07:20 AM

38% Dixie. You are definitely a Yankee.

Grcxx3 Jun 20th, 2006 07:42 AM

Okay - I've tried to post this FOUR times...let's see if this one works....

99% Dixie...which speaks to my Mississippi birth and New Orleans upbringing.

DS#1 got an 81% Dixie (that's what I get for marrying a Yank!)

Vittrad Jun 20th, 2006 07:45 AM

Looking over that quiz a bit more closely there are some serious problems with it on a Linguistic level, but it is fun for a bit of a diversion.

kaudrey Jun 20th, 2006 07:45 AM

33% Dixie. A Yankee.

Scarlett Jun 20th, 2006 08:12 AM

55%-Barely in Dixie :D

Davethecat65 Jun 20th, 2006 08:23 AM

33% Dixie. I'm a Yankee, actually a Californian, which I believe is a subset of Yankee. My Dixie score would have been lower, because I gave the only answer I had evern heard of to the last question. It was classified as Dixie, although I never have heard of "roll-up bugs" and have therefore never called them anything.

That being said, I love lots of southern food. And the blues and jazz.

TxTravelPro Jun 20th, 2006 08:31 AM

100% TEXAN!
Go Mavs!

BeachBoi Jun 20th, 2006 08:35 AM

LoveItaly Jun 20th, 2006 08:47 AM

My result was a Yankee. No surprise. I live in CA but the only ancestors that came from another part of the US were from NH. Fun test esm!

Scarlett Jun 20th, 2006 08:51 AM

I made the Yankee take the test...I am beginning to rub off on him, he was 33%, still a Yankee but close to Rebel ... yeehaw! lol

cantstayhome Jun 20th, 2006 08:54 AM

39% Dixie - how did that happen?

Definite linguistic issues, but amusing nonetheless :)

BuffaloGirl Jun 20th, 2006 08:56 AM

I'm a yankee doodle dandy (76%)! I didn't answer #20, because I just don't know about that bug!

Anyhow, around here we speak "Buffalo English."

Byrd Jun 20th, 2006 08:57 AM

97% Dixie. No surprise, since I'm a 6th generation Alabamian!

Samsaf Jun 20th, 2006 08:58 AM

96% Dixie. No surprise here!
