Are there discounted tickets to any NYC museums?
Are there discounts to museums such as MOMA? In Boston, there are passes as local libraries-- any insider tips for NYC? Thanks!

Many of the Museums have suggested admissions, with lower suggested amounts for seniors, children and students. However, given the price of admission - verus that of the average movie - I always encourage people to pay the full suggested amount if possible - since the "sugestions" are really to encourage use by people who really can;t afford the whole amount - not those who are spending money on many other things and just lookng for discounts.
(Movie theaters playing the latest, most forgettable Hollywood trash don;t provide discounts - why expect them from some of the gratest cultural institutions of the western world - which are providing somuch more value for the few $ involved?) But - there are a couple of options MoMA is free on Fridays from 4 to 8pm There is a combo MoMA ticket with Top of the Rock that is 20% off The Cloisters (a midieval museum uptown on the heights above the Hudosn) is actually part of the Met - and both can be visited in a single day for one ticket |
The libraries here serve millions of people so alas do not offer passes. But there are plenty of deals for museum discounts.
Most museums have a free or pay as you wish evening Some museums offer AAA discounts, most have senior or student rates There are promotions sometimes offered by programs of the NYC visitors bureau http://www.nycvisit.com There are passes you can buy that include admissions to several sites at a discount And yes, to beat everyone here to the punch--many people on this board advocate paying full price to museums, well deserving of the support. I believe that you have asked a perfectly reasonable question and have chosen to answer it as asked. Have fun in NY! |
Here's an idea for out of towners who visit NY a couple of times per year: MoMa has a discounted membership category
National/International $60 (100% tax-deductible) (For individuals more than 150 miles outside New York City) All benefits of Individual Membership If you visit more than 3 times in one year(at $20 per visit), or if this membership encourages you to visit more often, or go twice during one trip, it's a win-win situation for you and the museum. This is one of the more expensive museums in town, with a large collection, so this may work for some people |
citypass.com includes MOMA and is a good discount if you intend on going to the other venues.

Several museums have free entry on a specific day (time frame). You'll have to check individual museum's website to find out.
