Are there Black Flies in Denver?

Went to New england and Alaska in June and found the black flies awful. Are there black flies ( or other swarms) in the Denver area too? Are they found in all areas that are known for the cold and snow?

I've never had any insect problems in the Denver metro area - as a matter of fact, people remark how nice it is to be outside at dusk and not always be harrassed by mosquitoes or other biting insects (although sometimes they're around). Now I can't speak for more rural areas or around bodies of water, which may be different than the city, since I don't spend any time fishing or boating. I think the lack of insects has more to do with the very dry climate here than cold and snow conditions. If you're primarily in the city, you won't have any trouble.

I'm not sure what black flies are. If you mean house flies, we get lots of them east of Denver, in our barn in Aurora. I guess anywhere you find horse dung, you find flies! There are also some really nasty large deer flies out there, mostly down by the creek bed where we ride. When the horses sweat, these flies come around and they bite like crazy. Really unpleasant.

Otherwise, we don't really find many flies in our house in Denver. We do get swarms of miller moths every few years. Used to have a few mosquitoes, but not so much anymore.

There are no black flies in Denver or along the Platte River or Cherry Creek. With the exceptions of a very few low laying/watery areas there are no insects to speak of.

There is nothing like the black flies that you find in New England. Peaceout - may you never know what the little buggers are - Don't go to Maine in May!!

Thanks to all who replied. Feel safe to make my travel plans for June

But coyotes and mountain lions are and bite harder.

Very funny, fmpden! Are you trying to dissuade more Colorado immigrants?? I totally understand, if so!

No, relatively speaking -- coyotes and mountain lions along with deer are a bigger problem than black flies. But deer don't bite. And it is not a mountain problem but a suburb problem.

I don't think I've ever seen a black fly. Agree that the coyotes are a problem, though! I see and hear them all the time.

No. Maybe some horse flies near a stable, but no black flies.
