Are there any waves in Siesta Key?
 

We are planning a few days at the beach in FL before going to WDW, but we want waves to play in, boogie board on, etc. I was all set on Siesta Key, then it occurred to me that there may not be waves on the Gulf side. Is this true? If so, anywhere else you can recommend within 2 hrs of Orlando?

Just returned from Siest Key. You generally won't find the larger waves on the Gulf coast. On the Atlantic side I like New Smyrna Beach, but if you're looking for more action you may try Daytona or Cocoa Beach.

I live on Siesta Key and I can honestly tell you that most of the time there are no (significant) waves. Not to say that it's totally waveless, but it's more for the floaters, not for boogie boarders.

When a storm is brewing in the gulf, we get some really nice ones, but that's about it.

The one advantage of the gulf side is the water tempature in winter. Great deal more acceptable than the Atlantic side.

That said, if you really want bigger wave action, the Atlantic side is the place for you, but beware of cold waters during winter season.

You will be about an hours drive from WDW to many Atlantic beaches, so just pick one. Daytona Beach comes to mind.
