Are there any Brigham's left in Boston?
 

I'm heading home (Boston) in a couple of weeks and would love a chocolate frappe, and Brigham's always did the BEST frappe. I know alot of the locations are closed, like in my hometown (Winthop), but thought I would ask if there are any locations still open in Boston. If not I guess I'll try and find a Friendly's. Sigh.

While not Boston or a place likely on your itinerary, there is one on North Andover/Lawrence line in a supermarket mall - no one is ever in there, the waitstaff is surly, and the ice cream seems somewhat antique. Can't comment on the frappes.

Hi anonymous, I had the same thought. But unless I am way more computer illiterate than I thought, there is *no* store locator on the site!! Unbelievable!

Anyway to the OP, there is one in Wellesley on Washington Street a couple doors down from Whole Foods, and there used to be one in Concord center that may or may not still be there.

Oh my, I remember the one in Wellesley so well from the 50s/60s, when it had a blue mirrored front below the window and I could see myself eating an ice cream cone in it. I know the blue mirrored wall went a long time ago, but nice to think it's still there - I haven't been in Wellesley in 3 decades. Hope ice cream hasn't deteriorated, though - the caramel sundaes were memorable.

Thanks for the link and nice to know they are still around. I just googled it myself and found out THERE IS ONE on High St. Also the link above just gave me a coupon for a free ice cream cone, buy one get one free.

The site is that sort of bad design where the separate pages are un-bookmark-able, no matter where you go on the site, the link is just the the home page. Clicking on the link brings up the whole list.

It is very odd, but on my computer the page is cut off and the row that has "Kids Zone" in it displays only half of each box in that row and there is nothing below that row on my display, since even those boxes are incompletely displayed. No other web page has ever done that on my computer. Strange. It is lucky that I have no need to know where Brigham's is! :)

Wow, the memories! I used to haunt the Brigham's in Lexington because my high school boyfriend worked there. I still remember the outrageous peppermint ice cream sundaes and the Belmont Logs! Anyway, hope it's still good. Would be curious to hear how you liked it after you return.

We moved to an apartment very close to Harvard Square in June in the very early '70s. Brighams was prominently located next door to the Coop. We would walk there every night and get a small cone for 20 cents. (If we were really hungry or feeling flush we would splurge on the large 30 cent ones!) That was where DH discovered the joy of Mocha Almond, an exotic flavor that did not exist in the (boring) midwest. Those were some of our fondest memories that first summer, and we continued the summertime tradition for all our years in Cambridge--altho we, of course, also patronized the wonderful Bailey's as well!

i worked in the one in kenmore sq while in college in'72 for 2 weeks. I got canned because i thought we were supposed to make the cones like the ones in the promo posters (big). the manager said "what are you DOING?" when he saw the huge cone I making. I said "making it look like the one in the poster". he said "that's just advertising!!!" more importantly, however, a boy came in and flirted with me...so much more enticing than making cones for customers. it matters not. their mocha almond ice cream was the best in the whole world.

The Brigham's in Concord Center is now another restaurant (Helen's) but they still serve Brigham's ice cream.

The one on High Street in Boston is the only one still around that I am aware of.

Spent many 10th grade afternoons drinking "Lime Rickeys" at the one in Hingham.

Okay, Boston Fodorites, where is your favorite place for ice-cream these days?

My favorites for ice cream in the greater Boston area: Toscanini's, Herrell's, Emack and Bolio's, Picco, Richardson's, Ron's Gourmet Ice Cream and Bowling (yes, that's right), and Kimball Farm. Some like Christine's, Lizzy's, or J.P. Lick's, but I'm less a fan of these.

Last I knew, there was a Brigham's in Arlington Heights. Not as fond of their ice cream.

Did you know that Brigham's Ice Cream is now owned by H.P. Hood? And that you now need a microscope to find the strawberries in strawberry ice cream? (the coffee still tastes the same).

Brigham's went chapter 11. The ice cream plant has been closed & moved to a Hood factory. The restaurants are now owned by a seperate company. They still serve rasberry-lime rickeys.

The tiny one in Wellesley Hills (Washington St RT 16 at RT 9) is still there.

Other excellent ice cream restaurants - Toscanini's (Central SQ Cambridge), Cabot's (Washington ST Newtonville), or Richardson's (Reading [inside Jordan's furniture], Middleton [farm / processing plant])

Indeed, the "locator" link isn't visible to me any more (Safari 4.0.2, Mac OS 10.4.11). That site is designed so badly!

I just want to say that my current favorite ice cream place is Herrell's.

I don't get the hype for Lizzy's. I thought their ice cream has no flavor.

My new favorite ice cream, after just recently discovering it is made my Richardson's. It is carried by Louie's in Somerville. It's now our top choice(compared to Toscanini's, Herrell's, Emack and Bolio, Christine's, Lizzy's, Kimball Farms and JP Licks). I think the reason for it is because it's not too sweet and cloying so you want to have more, and can actually finish more : ) On that respect though, maybe that's not so good if you're trying to watch your ice cream intake : )

CommanderMcBragg, you'll likely be happy to know that Cabot's in fact dishes up Richardson's ice cream. They don't make their own.
