Are room reservation a must for travel between Yellowstone and Rapid City

We'll be travelling the end of June and have reservations in Yellowstone and Rapid City. When we leave Yellowstone we'll be on the road for 4 nights before we arrive in Rapid City. I like the flexibility of being able to stop overnight wherever we feel like stopping, but since there are not a lot of motels along the way I am concerned that we may have problem finding a place if we don't book ahead. Any feedback from those who have made this trip would be appreciated.

I don't know about that area but considering the time period, I would make reservations.

Which route are you taking to Rapid? Not that it really matters--most hotels will be booked solid the end of June. In fact, I'd start making reservations now, especially if you're going through Montana. I talked my husband into not making reservations one time and we darn near spent the night in the car. Considering where we ended up, the car probably was a better choice!

Yes, make reservations. Maybe even multiple reservations. Most major hotel/motel chains only require 24 hour notice prior for cancellations. I'd book through those hotel's own reservation system, and not through an 3rd party site, as it's usually a lot easier to cancel through the hotel's own system.

In the summer, on that route, I would not run the risk of being forced to drive late or deviate from my route.
I also have found that the best and more expensive places fill first, and the ones left over are often less than the best.
I would have a reservation for peace of mind and to preclude the downside of not being able to find a place.

I think the downside risk is considerable and I never have seen a major upside benefit. Most summer visitors to Yellowstone come from east to west, so the number of tourists on the road during the peak months is high.

You may find the same situation with motel occupancy before you get to the western Dakotas.
