Are restaurants open New Years Day in NYC?

I understand that this is a very popular day to be in NYC (and of course the night before!) but curious if restaurants are open? I understand that most restaurants are closed on Christmas Day but does the same hold for New Years Day since both are legal holidays?

In a city with so many restaurants, something will be open, never fear. If there's a particular spot you have in mind, just call.

Oh, and I've been out to dinner every Christmas for the last 8 in NYC with no problems. Not everyone celebrates Christmas, of course, so planety of places are open.

I believe that this is THE MOST popular time to be in New York City, restaurant owners are business people. Someone has to feed all these tourists. My guess is that there will be plenty open on New Years Day (more than on Christmas Day which is a religious, family day) Steve

We too will be visiting from Jan 1-5, never thought about the chance of restaurants closing and we arrive early morning. Appreciate opinions from locals (or do you all eat at home). I know it's a busy time for show tickets, (want to see at least 2) so where do we eat? Thanks.

My friend is the Executive Chef at Orsay on Lexington and 75th. I know they'll be open that day. I'm assuming many other restaurants will be, as well.

Trust me, there are large portions of the Manhattan population where reservations are the only thing they ever make for dinner!

You'll find few restaurants closed on New Year's Day. I live in the city and have celebrated countless New Years here and have never had trouble finding a place for brunch or dinner on New Years Day. If there's a restaurant you're specifically interested in trying, you might call ahead, but I doubt you'll have trouble finding a good meal.

NYC on New Year's Day is pretty much like a Sunday. Restaurants are open, usually serving great brunches. Stores are open but close early. Public transportation is on a Holiday schedule. I Love New Year's Day in NYC. It is festive and not crowded. The festivities of the night before are all cleaned up and the city is vibrant. Have a great time!!
