We are two couples spending a week in Oct. in Cal. we are visiting Carmel/Monteray, Napa valley and San Francisco. We Have 3 full days and 2 nights scheduled for San Francisco. We want the most bang for the bucks for a Monday-Wed visit. We see that Archbishop Mansion and Tuscan Inn on f.w. are the same price. since some on this board have suggested do/not stay on f.w. We are wondering which we would enjoy most. we are a 2 couples over 55. Please help!!

Well, if you want the "most bang for the bucks" then stay at the Archbishop Mansion!! :-[ LOL!!!
Sorry, I just couldn't resist. Actually, I don't know anything about either one of the places you mentioned, but I thought that area of Calif was beautiful. |
Archbishop's Mansion is a bit out of the way from the things I would guess you would want to see. It is also in a somewhat or could be somewhat dicey neighborhood by night. You will definitely need a car to get around in the evening at the Mansion. Tuscan Inn is in the heart of it and you can easily and I would say..relatively safely walk around in the evening. Have you looked at The Sherman House?

No, please give me some info on the Sherman House. Do they have a web site?

It's a historic landmark more in the Union Street area. I checked the website and it seems(wow) to be part of the Hyatt chain. There also seem to be many options for reservations that will be less than simply calling for a room. (Room rates seem to be in the 2-300 range). I have not stayed there but know folks who have who love it. I did look at the Archbishops's website and it is part of the Joie de Vive hotel group. There is a recent opening of Hotel Adagio in that same group. It is in the Union Square area. You will have ready access to the theatre district and the restaurants in the Union Square-Financial district area. There is someone who does post frequently on this site named Kal. I know he has stayed at the Tuscan Inn. He seems to have pretty good taste in food and wine( read:it seems to match mine) and he would be able to give you some better ideas about the Tuscan Inn. I suggest you address a post to him and see what happens.

Roscoe, we stayed at the Tuscan Inn a couple of years ago. Fine hotel, small but elegant lobby, small rooms but nicely appointed. Afternoon wine. We stayed at the Marriott Fisherman's Wharf last Feb. Large lobby, slightly larger rooms than Tuscan, and good breakfast buffet. In the F.W. area I would go for best price as they are all about the same standard.
We like to stay at Fisherman's Wharf, drop our bags (and the car) at the hotel and set off into the city by cable car. Get off at Union Square and leisurely walk back to the wharf through town (Market St., Embarcadero, China Town, etc). Even my mom who is 80 enjoyed the wander through the city. Fisherman's Wharf is also walking distance to some wonderful tourist sites and Bay Cruise departures (loved it, would highly recommend this), Ghiradelli Square, souvenir shop laden Pier 39 with a really good aquarium. The only thing we miss at F.W. is a really great restaurant. There is an ok place at Ghiradelli Square (sorry, can't remember the name) and of course the famous seafood restaurants like Aliotos and A'Sabellas so you sure won't go hungry. The Embarcadero also had a couple of decent places. All within walking distance! I always vote for Fisherman's Wharf as a hotel destination for tourists! |
Roscoe, my husband and I stayed at the Tuscan Inn a few weeks ago and loved being on f.w. We walked most everywhere we wanted to go.
Our room was very clean and faced the interior landscaped courtyard which was quiet and were happy with this choice. From another poster, perhaps Kal, I heard that rooms facing the street were a bit noisy. The Tuscan Inn offers complementary coffee and biscotti in the AM and has a wine hour in the late afternoon. Nice touch. We would definitely stay here again. We booked through Hotwire and got a great rate, too. |
