Arcadia - early June
We will be staying in Southwest Harbor to see Arcadia NP, the first week in June, and would like recommendations on what to do and see and suggestions on how to fight the black flies.....

how to fight the black flies.....
You don't. Use a bug spray

In Acadia, go hiking
|
Bathe with Avon Skin-so-soft to keep the flies and mosquitoes away, and don't wear bright clothing.

Keep all food and drink tightly wrapped and avoid picnics during the height of fly season. Even an open soda pop can will attract flies, dispose of everything.

A whale watch boat trip is recommended, and the 2 hour bus tour of Acadia is recommended before setting out on your own to explore.
If driving through Augusta on your way to Southwest Harbor, a stop at the Maine State Museum is well worth an hour or two of your time. Very nice exhibits on Indians, early settlers, early industries, native wildlife etc.

Using only Skin-So-Soft if the insects are truely bad will practically insure you of a day of misery. I speak from experience!
|
Yes, don't just USE the skin so soft, BATHE in it. Dunk your whole body in it, shampoo with it!!!

Someone once told me that "Bounce" fabric softener sheets keeps the bugs away. So at a picnic we tape some bounce up around all the picnic tables.
Worked like a charm except all the food tasted like Bounce.
|
ACADIA

OFF makes a new botanical gel that is supposed to be good, just cover yourself with that.
