app for New York City Transit

What is a good app for my iphone for the NY Transit system with directions, routes, and wait times for buses and subways?

For just a subway map, I like the Kickmap app.

I don't use an app. I use the MTA's mobile-enhanced site: www.mta.info.

I use a free iPhone app called NYCMate, which provides off-line (meaning they download before you need them) maps of subway and bus lines in every borough, and PATH and the three commuter rail lines. When you touch a station on the map, you're immediately shown the next several scheduled arrivals of all trains or buses to any destination reachable on a particular line from that station. With a single click, you can get a neighborhood map, which shows the layout of the station, including where the stairs are. I find this latter feature invaluable, particularly if I'm headed to an unfamiliar station.

The free iPhone Hopstop app is indispensable for figuring out routing via bus or train. It takes into account the frequent weekend MTA construction, causing train delays or re-routings.

Then there's the free Train Delay, which instantly tells you if service on a particular line is good or not.

Also, NextStop, which compares the time of day with the subway schedule (yes, there is one), and tells you when the next train is theoretically expected to arrive. It does not work in real time, however, so, if there are delays, it doesn't take them into account.

There are quite a few more freebies; these are some of the ones I use most frequently.

Subway and bus timetables are sheer fantasy. All you need to know is that in Manhattan - in rush hour they run every 3 to 4 minutes and in the middle of the night every 15 to 20 minutes. In between the times are in between.

All times are GMT -8. The time now is 02:11 AM.
