Apartments in Savannah

A young friend (late 20s') is moving to Savannah next month and is looking for suggestions for an apartment - specifically, best areas to look. She has been there twice, but really knows nothing about the city, except that she likes it!

Savannah is unusual in that one can go from a nice historic area to gang territory in a matter of a block or 2. Be sure she visits the area of prospective apartment after dark - and I might even call the Savannah Police to check out a specific address/location.

this website might be more helpful:

The "moving to" threads don't always last on this forum, so you might want to write down any info you receive here.

She'd do better to wait until SCAD gets out. There will be tons of available apts. then.

What is SCAD?

Savannah College of Art and Design - a major presence in the Historic District of Savannah for several reasons. The Historic district is rather small geographically and SCAD has a very scattered-site campus; therefore, they appear to be everywhere.

SCAD has a vibrant historic preservation department and what started as a tense relationship between the young college and an old city has flourished for both - some run down, under-utilized or even vacant old buildings were bought by the school, some for classroom and dorm use, but in addition some as living laboratories for the preservation department. Almost without exception the renovation of these buildings has been tasteful and consistent with the appearance of this area of the city.

There is relatively little dorm space - enough for freshman and most sophomores - so there are many rental units in the immediate area.
