Apartment style accomodation in NYC

Hi All,

Some girlfriends, probably about 6, are heading to NYC next year, about October, to celebrate one of their big zero birthdays and are thinking of trying to get an apartment to stay in rather than a standard hotel. They realise that one apartment is not likely to be able to sleep 6 but were thinking perhaps they could find a boutique hotel/apartment style hotel and take a couple of rooms/adjoining apartments. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this a feasible idea even?

I did read somewhere, and can't find it again, that there is somewhere around the Rockefeller centre that has this type of hotel. Is that right or am I dreaming it up?

Thanks.

Try the Affinia Gardens, or other Affinia properties. We had a two bdrm/two bath suite, with kitchen, and living room at the Affinia Gardens. It slept at least 6 or 7, with pull out sofa and a day bed. Lots of room. Really reasonably priced and very nice service. On the Upper East Side. I think we paid about $625 in May 2006.

I think you're thinking of the Radio City Apartments.

When I went with my girlfriends (there were 8 of us) we had two suites at the Benjamin (an Affinia property). Each suite has a bedroom, living room with pull-out couch, bathroom and kitchenette. It worked great for us.

My husband and I are taking our daughter to NYC after Christmas and we are staying at the Benjamin in a suite again. I think we are paying around $375/night.

Last month I stayed at the San Carlos - a "suites" hotel located across the street from the Affinia 50 on East 50th Street.

We loved this hotel. It was modern and very clean. We would definitely stay there again.

Radio City apartments are a good deal and a very central location - but sell out very early. You need to check exactly what options they have for you. The affinia group has several suite hotels in Manhattan with a variety of configurations and are a good deal in the moderate price range.

For 6 I would either get a large suite with 2 baths or 2 one bedroom suite - as long as someone doesn't mind sleeping on a sofa bed.

Oct. can be pricey and what will work depends on how many beds you need. Most of the nicer hotels only have 1 bedroom suites with max 2 double or queen beds in bedroom and queen sofabed in living room. While you can find some 2 bedroom suites, these tend either to be very pricey or in the lesser suite hotels like Eastgate Tower, Affinia Manhattan, Radio City (with only 1 bathroom), Best western Hospitality (only 1 bathroom). The Alex is a trendier hotel with 2 bedroom 2 bath suites but usually very pricey. The San Carlos has some 1 bedrooms with 2 full bathrooms which would be a bonus. I think the Beacon has 1 or 2 2 bedrooms but you have to phone for those. If budget's an issue, you might be better splitting up.

Whatever you do, avoid the temptation of a private apartment rental that's not in a hotel or b & b (1871house.com, countryinnthecity.com etc). There are loads of scams and loads of problems with one off rentals. It's just not a good idea in NYC.

Thank you all so very much - you have all saved me hours of web surfing!
Yes sf7307 you are right I was thinking of the Radio City apartments.
Thanks mclaurie for the tip about scams. I had heard that before and I had actually thought it was basically illegal. Anyway have already told my girlfriend that it is a no go.

Thanks everyone. I love these forums everyone is always so helpful.
