Apartment Rental In NYC through Vacation Rentals by Owner
Without calling the BBB, I'd like to know if anyone has used VRBO for a short term, furnished apartment in NYC? It seems like it would be a good way to get a feel for the area, but at the same time, I am concerned because I would be dealing with total strangers.

Yes. I first found an apartment on VRBO which I rented twice. It's a great place at Worldwide Plaza and everything was perfect. I only wish I could be renting it for a month on my next trip, but it is booked solid for up to 6 months ahead.
As mentioned, VRBO doesn't really rent apartments. It's just a place for individuals to advertise their own. Find one and ask here or look on Trip Advisor to see if anyone knows it. Correspond with the owner a few times and let your common sense guide you from there.

lcuy and NeoPatrick have said it all. Many many people use vrbo.com but one person's experience is not the same as another's since by definition, you're dealing with different owners. The website itself does nothing to verify accuracy or take any responsibility for the listings.

People do pay $179 for the listings vs. say Craigslist which is free.

livitup: You would be renting from strangers, but as an owner of vacation rentals that advertises on VRBO, we are dealing with strangers as well, so it goes both ways, we have to trust you and you have to trust us, and owners do get burned by renters as well.
