Try www.hotels.com for pricing and location of hotels for your dates of travel, and book asap, since prices go up in the city over New Year's Eve.

The city is very busy that night. Something like 750,000 were in Times Square on New Year's 2005, so tons of people are out on the street having a good time.

There is an all suites hotel on 34th and Lex Ave that would probably work for you, it's in a nice residential area, lots of restaurants and close to shopping and all the sites, just a couple of blocks from the Empire State Building. The name of the hotel was changed recently and I am sure someone will remember. It was listed on hotels.com a while ago.

HOpe this helps.

Are you asking what this area will be like on New Years Eve - since its primarily a business district it will be fairly quiet.

Or are you asking what NYC is like on New Years Eve - and then the answer is a million people trying to get into Times Square - mobbed restaurants, everyone fighting for cabs to get home and the public transit system around Times Square closed for security reasons - you'll need to walk in that area.

By the way, curious as to why you want to be only on 5th Avenue - there are so many other hotel choices. (And you did mean hotel suite didn;t you - not actual apartment. You're unlikely to find the latter available for rent for a few days on Fifth Avenue.)

I too am confused about your request. You must clarify if you really want/need an apt. or just hotel accomodation for a family. What's your budget and why only Fifth Ave.? You will find it harder to find affordable restaurants (or restaurants in general) on or near Fifth Ave. There is a hotel now called Hotel 5A, previously a Clarion, that sits at 40st. and Fifth Ave. It's one of the more affordable ones at or near Fifth Ave. Not sure whether they have family size rooms.

As wantsomesun describes, Times Square is where most activity is on New Year's Eve. The other place is Central Park where there's run throught the park and fireworks at midnight. If you post back on the number in your party, a budget and what you'd like to do, we may be able to suggest hotels or websites to check. It will make a big difference if you want to attempt to go to Times Square (not recommended-too crowded and cold) or not. Not really a place for children on NYE.
