apache trail drive
 

would like to drive part of the Apache Trail,will be coming from Scottsdale. However, I don't think I want to tackle the parts with drop offs or gravel, as I don't like heights. What's the best route? Would I still get to see Tortilla Flats, Canyon Lake, etc?

Take 88 north out of Apache Junction. It's a circle route, so you can start at either end and drive the circle. There are no jumping off points along the way, with the exception of quitting in Globe. You have to either go back the way you came, or continue on. It's really a nice drive!!

Since you are in scottsdale; take the 101 south and then the 60 east to apache junction. Then take the route suggested above. Once you go past canyon lake and into tortilla flats you can turn around if you wish and avoid the roads you you dont want to travel on. there is no need to travel to roosevelt lake and globe.

thanks - how long will the trip take, as you just laid it out? It sounds like a good plan, to me! Also, is it worth checking out the ferry boat ride on Canyon Lake?

It has been awhile; but I'd say from Scottsdale it is less than an hour to get to the turn off. Once you are on the trail it is about a half an hour or so to get to canyon lake and then tortilla flats. I may be off by 15 minutes or so. I can't really say whether the ferry is worth it. The lake is a scenic lake with canyon walls. You might want to check with the boat operator whether you need advance tickets (I sort of doubt it) and then make up your mind once you get there.
