Anza Borrego Desert or San Diego Wild Animal Park in Dec?
We will be spending 5 days in LA and 2 days in Palm Springs in Dec. We have one extra day and night between the two. Which is a better use for our extra day-a drive from Palm Springs to the Anza Borrego Desert with a stop for a hike (we do not have a 4 wheel drive), or an overnight in Escondido with a visit to the Wild Animal Park?

Very different activities. We enjoyed both. You do not need 4 wheel drive to do a hike at Anza Borrego. There is a hike to an oasis that did and it was beautiful. You park at the trail head. Bring lots of water because it is dry, even if it won't be hot.
The wild animal park offered a tram ride.

DH and I did both during our last trip to San Diego. I've only ever been to Anza Borrego in the spring when things are flowering. I'm sure the cooler weather in Dec. will have the animals more active. Either choice is a winner.

Thanks so much for your prompt replies. I have a few more questions: If we drive from Palm Springs to Anza Borrego Desert, is the drive scenic and how long should it take us to get there? After leaving Anza Borrego, about how long a drive is it to reach the main highway to get to LA. As we will be going in Dec.and the days are short, do you think it is ok to leave Anza Borrego as it gets dark or should we make sure to leave with enough tim to reach the main highway before it gets dark? Also, can anyone suggest a decent, moderately priced hotel at LAX for one night. I checked trip advisor and everything around the airport seems horrible. We have to stay there as we have an early flight out.
