Anywhere Jet Blue flies

Me again. well life got in the way and we never booked our free flight to anywhere in the US that JetBlue flies. With time restraints (1 week only) we're probably going to have to take a short flight. Although we were thinking Florida I don't know how hot it may be in July. Any recommendations on where to go that it's not too sweaty and swampy. We're now thinking of St. Augustine. Reviews have been limited and so-so. Any input would be a real help. Thanks as always.

I think on your earlier post someone suggested Long Beach, California. It will be cool the closer you are to the ocean.

Of course since everyone else has the same idea, hotel rates go up in July, although you might do okay during midweek or even at one of the hotels near Long Beach airport which although inland is only about 5 miles to the beach and still pretty mild weather.

we're travelling from New York! Sorry, forgot to mention. California, although lovely may just be too long of a flight. But it's a definite possibility

I think that you can book the flight now and plan your travel for anytime.

That said, St Augustine in winter is delightful.

I think I can answer your questions about St. Augustine. My wife and I have had a condo there for 17 years. What do you want to know?

How about Bermuda? Shorter flight than Florida.

Thanks. OrlandoVic...I'd love to pick your brain. We've heard that St. Augustine is gorgeous in the winter and fall but what about July. Our hectic schedule only gives a small window and the "freebies" expire in early September. Flights are limited since, as with all "complimentary tickets" there are only a few flights available to us. We have narrowed it down to July?? That said...we'll be renting a car of course since I see JAX is 1.5 hours away. Any hotels you can recommend even outside of St. Augustine. We also have an opportunity to use someone's RCI/Interval timeshare. But we don't HAVE to use it! I'd greatly appreciate any info. Additionally, if you've experienced any other Florida areas in July, that would be great too. Thanks again for your time and anyone elses.

Traveller3-

Let's start with basics: all of Florida is hot and humid in July. However, that is no reason why you can not have a good time wherever you go.

There is good general information about the city and surrounding area at <http://www.getaway4florida.com/> and <http://www.st.augustine.com/>.

You'll definitely want to see "The Old Fort" (Castillo de San Marcos). A good way to get an overview of the entire historic area is by sightseeing train or trolley <http://www.redtrains.com/> or <http://tinyurl.com/yhb57v> which offer a number of packages with some admissions included and all-day reboarding privileges. You can see a lot in one day this way.

With respect to hotels, do you have any preferences for beach vs. non-beach or inland hotels/motels/B&Bs?

Any preference for historic district lodging vs. lodging just outside the historic district? (One advantage to staying in the historic district is that you can walk everywhere.) Naturally prices are slightly higher, but not exorbitantly (sp?) so.

The Jacksonville airport is between 1-1½ hours away. (1½ hours is overly generous.) Once you exit the airport, you drive south on I-95 to State Road 207 and then go a few more miles east toward the city and the water. It's very easy to find.

When you are ready for specific lodging and restaurant recommendations, let me know.

Jet Blue has nonstops from JFK to Burbank or Long Beach. Burbank car rental is speedy and you can be up in Santa Barbara in 90 minutes. Beautiful drive, too.

Yeah it's a long flight, but you gain 3 hours going west so it's.....leave JFK at 4:30 and be in St. Augustine at 7:00, or leave JFK at 4:30 and be in California at 7:30.

Save the shorter trips for when you have to PAY for the flight!

Jet Blue also has non stop to St. Martin (JFK to SXM)....from there you can get to many caribbean islands as well. You can take the ferry at St. Martin and go to Anguilla. There are many moderately priced hotels right on the beach. Prices are at the lowest right now thru mid November.

As for Florida, well the weather is hot and humid there and it is hot and humid here.....we have been to Fla all months os the year, and if you stay on the coast, you will be fine. Our FAVORITE stay is Captiva, there is a non stop flight from JFK to Ft. Myers airport. You then take the elevator downstairs and walk right to your rental car and it is a 40 minute drive to Captiva. We stay at the Tween Waters Inn in a Gulf front room in the Sea Grape building. A huge breakfast is also included in your stay. The weather is warm but the beautiful gulf breeze keeps it very cool and no bugs! The Tween has a wonderful pool and pool bar that serves excellent food. There is a fridge in the room so we stock up on water, beer and snacks. There is inexpensive casual dining. The beach is wonderful complete with cabanas or chairs with umberellas and the gulf is warm, calm and clear. We always see dolphins jumping out of the water! The sunsets are what postcards are made of. OK I guess by now you know it's one of our favorite places for so many reasons...a beautiful casual tranquil place that will not break the bank either. We vacation a lot and we always go back to Captiva.

We have been there in July many times and it has been just beautiful...not sweaty or swampy
